Ahmednagar: Taking stringent action in the Ahmednagar hospital fire case, the Maharashtra government has suspended Ahmednagar district civil surgeon and thee other health officials and terminated services of two staff nurses, two days after eleven COVID-19 patients died in a blaze in the ICU of the district civil hospital, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Monday.

District civil surgeon, medical officers and a doctor, and staff nurse have been suspended, Tope twitted. He stated the services of another two staff nurses have been terminated.

The action was taken based on the information received regarding the incident, Tope added.

Most of those who died in the fire on Saturday were aged between 65 to 83.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that an inquiry committee has been constituted to find out the cause of the massive fire that broke out in the ICU ward of the Ahmednagar Civil Hospital in Maharashtra on Saturday, following which, an FIR was also lodged against unknown people.

11 Covid-19 patients had died and eight patients had received burn injuries in a blaze.

Taking note of the same, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had ordered a probe into the tragedy, and announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of those who died.

A probe is underway to ascertain the exact cause behind the fire and identify lapses, reports PTI.

Tope on Sunday had also said the state government will allocate funds for fire safety audits in all district hospitals and also work towards creating a post of 'fire safety officer' in each of these facilities.
