Pune Municipal Corporation seeks Essentiality certificate from DMER to establish new medical college

The idea of developing a medical college of Pune Municipal Corporation was put forward last year. The idea was to start a college in the name of Bharat Ratna late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and provision was made in the budget every year accordingly.

A resolution was passed in the main meeting of the Standing Committee that the college should be set up through a municipal trust on the lines of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's medical college. The state government's approval was also sought for the college to be set up through a trust.

The final proposal for the construction of the medical college has been prepared and has been approved by the construction department of the corporation.

The Corporation informed that the approval process of the Union Ministry of Health and Medical Council of India (MCI) will be completed soon.

A team from the Director of Medical Education and Maharashtra University Health Sciences, Nashik will visit Pune. After preparing and submitting their report, the further process will go to the center. Once approved by the Union Ministry of Health and MCI, the medical college will get real recognition

As per a recent media report, the civic body has already submitted a letter to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) describing the current status and development of the project. The final proposal was prepared by the corporation and Mayor Murlidhar Mohol himself submitted it to the DMER.

During the course, Deputy Mayor Sou, Saraswatitai Shendge, Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Rubel Agarwal, Health Head Dr. Ramchandra Hankare, Assistant Head of Health Mrs. Anjali Sabne were present.

The application has also been submitted to the state's Medical Education Minister Shri Amitji Deshmukh.

One hundred percent of effort will be made to meet the capacity of 100 admissions for the first year of medical college. In this regard, work is underway to make classrooms in municipal schools.

In the next five years, after the approval of the medical college, the construction of a 500-bed multispeciality hospital, dormitory, a laboratory will be done in phases in the next five years, informed Mayor Murlidhar Mohol. He also stated via his social media post that the importance of this medical college cannot be underestimated in view of Corona's condition.

According to The Indian Express, In August 2019, the PMC Standing Committee gave the approval to form a trust to run the medical college at Rs 622 crore. The college will be set up on a 10-acre plot and named after late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, officials said. There are 595 posts of doctors, nurses, and other necessary staff proposed for the college. The Ahemdabad-based INI Design Studio Pvt Ltd has been assigned the post of the consultant on the project. "After necessary certificates are obtained from the government, we will send the proposal to Medical Council of India for approval," Ramchandra Hankare, health chief at the PMC, told the daily.
