Woman Duped of Rs 1.13 Crore in Medical Seat Scam, Pune Couple Booked
Pune- In a recent medical admission fraud case, a Dubai-based Indian businesswoman was allegedly duped of Rs 1.13 crore by a couple who promised to get her daughter admitted to a medical college in Mumbai or Pune.
On Tuesday, the woman filed a complaint at the Powai Police Station in Mumbai. In her complaint, the businesswoman has accused Pune-based couple Karan B and his wife, Saumya. The complaint further states that after paying the initial amount, the couple did not respond to her communications. When she asked about this, they threatened to tarnish her reputation and challenged her to try and get the money back.
Following her complaint, the police have immediately started an investigation. The police team is trying to gather more information about the couple living in Pune before taking action against them. However, no arrest has been made in the case yet.
According to a TOI media report, the woman has an 'Overseas Citizen of India' or OCI status. The businesswoman met the couple in Powai in 2023 after her daughter passed her Class 12 exams in 2023. The couple had asked for Rs 3 crore to help her get a medical college seat. She made the initial payment of Rs 1.13 crore, while the rest of the amount was to be paid after admission.
On not getting any response from the couple at the medical seat, the businesswoman demanded her money back from the couple. Whenever the businesswoman called them, they made excuses. Later, they started threatening her.
Meanwhile, speaking to the TOI, the police officer said that the complainant had proof of giving money to the couple. "It has been captured on CCTV," he said. The case was registered after two cheques issued by the couple got bounced.
