Puducherry:  Alleging that the Congress-DMK government in the Union Territory had "cheated" medical aspirants by taking bribes from the private Medical Colleges, AIADMK (East) Secretary and legislature party leader A Anbazhagan on Tuesday urged the government to take immediate steps to get 50 percent seats as government quota.

Talking to newspersons here, Anbazhagan said that the Union government had issued a gazette notification that all state governments should get 50 per cent first-year MBBS seats in private medical colleges reserved as government quota.

If the state government was really concerned with the cause of the students, a bill in this regard should have been passed in the territorial assembly and a GO be issued.

However, instead of doing this, the Chief Minister is functioning in favor of private medical colleges, he alleged.

Anbazhagan said, since the government had failed, some students moved the Madras High Court and the government deliberately failed to submit proper explanation sought by the Court.

When the issue is sub-judice, the government held a discussion with private medical college owners and announced that now it is not legally possible to get 50 percent seat as a government quota.

He said that the government should pass an ordinance on the issue and should seek some more time from National Medical Commission (NMC) to complete the counseling here.

It was prescribed December 28 as the last date to complete the counseling, he added.
