Rajasthan MBBS student studying in Russia found dead at home a week after return

Balotra: In a tragic incident, an MBBS student from Balotra who was studying in Russia allegedly committed suicide at his home in Rajasthan's Balotra district a week after returning home from abroad.

The deceased was pursuing his medical studies in Russia and had returned home around seven days ago.

The exact reason behind his death is unclear and is currently under investigation.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning at around 11 am when his family members went to wake him up. They found his room locked from the inside. Despite repeated calls, there was no response. Suspecting something was wrong, family members looked through a window and saw him hanging inside the room.

After this, they informed the police, who reached the spot and broke down the door. They immediately took the student to the hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead, Dainik Bhaskar has reported. 

The police have registered a case, and the investigation is underway. 

Medicall Dialogues had previously reported that approximately 93 aspirants reportedly died by suicide in cases linked to the NEET over the last five years, according to an analysis of media reports by India Today. The analysis found that 2025 recorded the highest number of such reported deaths, while 2026 has already seen at least 14 cases so far.

The year-wise data showed a steady rise in reported NEET-linked student suicides. At least four cases were reported in 2021, nine in 2022, 14 in 2023, 19 in 2024, and 32 in 2025. In 2026, at least 14 such cases have already been reported, including five after the announcement of the exam cancellation on May 12.

Among the recent cases were a 17-year-old student from Curtorim in Goa on May 14, another from Lakhimpur Kheri and another from Delhi on May 15, an NEET aspirant from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, who died in Sikar on May 16, and another from Kalaburagi in Karnataka on May 24.
