Four TN final year MBBS students studying in Russia drown while attempting to save fellow medico
Tamil Nadu: In an unfortunate incident, four final-year young medical students from Tamil Nadu studying at Volgograd State Medical University, Russia died after drowning in strong currents of the River Volga in an attempt to rescue their fellow medico.
The deceased medicos have been identified as Mohammed Ashiq of Tiruppur district, R Vignesh of Cuddalore, Manoj Anand of Salem, and Stephen of Chennai.
As per recent media accounts, the incident took place on August 8. The MBBS students often went to the riverfront to refresh themselves, but this time they had gone into the river for a dip, along with seven others. One of them entered the water. On hearing his cries for help, others tried to help him but due to the strong currents of water, three other medicos could not rescue him nor could they come out. Within a few minutes, all four drowned. Their bodies were washed ashore and the students immediately got in touch with the Russian emergency contacts, reports PTI.

The families of the deceased medicos are devastated by the tragic incident.
'It was a big dream for us to see my son as a doctor and a bigger dream for him to become one. From a very young age he wanted to become a doctor,' Mohammed Rafi, the grieving father of the deceased student Asif told Times of India.
Another relative of deceased medico Vignesh told a daily that his passion for medicine landed him in Russia and they are devastated by the news of Vignesh's death. He added that "He (Vignesh) spoke to his mother and sister on Saturday before fore he ventured out. He used to visit India every year during a vacation in July-August. He was keen to return, but his mother insisted he not to travel during COVID times."
