Man arrested for duping MBBS students of Rs 1.5 Crore by Posing as Currency Broker

Chennai: A conman who cheated several medical students hailing from Tamil Nadu and other States and enrolled in MBBS courses in Russia, has now been arrested by Police.

The 43-year-old conman posed as a currency exchange agent, promised to deposit Russian rubles in the bank accounts of the MBBS students in exchange of Indian currency. He has duped the family members of at least 40 students of a huge amount of Rs 1.5 crore.

Police arrested the accused identified as K Anthony Raja of Mangadu on Monday. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Allegedly, the accused used to utilise the money taken from the families of medical students to lead a lavish life in Gia and other holiday destinations.

Avadi CCB officials have informed that the accused promised to exchange the money for ruble in exchange of a commission and students who failed to exchange the Indian currency for ruble to pay their university fee used to seek his help.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the matter came to light after the parents of an MBBS student enrolled at Crimea State Medical Academy lodged a complaint in this regard. Allegedly, the accused conman took around Rs 3.5 lakh from them with the promise of exchanging it with rubles. Howevr, after receiving the amount from them, the accused allegedly kept dodging them.

DT Text adds that the 3rd year MBBS student got the recommendation of the accused from her seniors and asked her mother to deposit the amount of the fees in the account of the accused agent.

Police have informed that the mother of the accused is a retired school teacher while his father is an ex-serviceman. The accused was into trading electronic goods and he was married to a Chinese national.
