Tamil Nadu to cross 5,000 mark with 1,650 additional MBBS seats in 11 medical colleges

The information to this effect comes with a recent announcement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami wherein he said that from 1,945 MBBS seats in 2010-2011, the number of medical seats in the State has increased to 3,400 now. In the coming years, 11 new government medical colleges would offer 1,650 more seats.

He said that the state has taken action to set up medical colleges in 11 districts so as to add 1,650 more medical course seats in the coming years. Inaugurating a new 250-bed Fortis Healthcare Hospital here, Palaniswami further stated that the AIADMK government had secured permission to set up medical colleges in 11 districts, which will add 1,650 seats to the existing 3,400, quotes IANS.

"To enable more students from rural areas and economically backward sections to realise their dream of becoming doctors, the State government, in a short period, got the approval of the Centre to establish new medical colleges in 11 districts - Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, The Nilgiris, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Kallakurichi, Tiruvallur, Tiruppur, Namakkal and Krishnagiri. The foundation stones has been laid and construction was underway. Through this, the State government has taken measures to create an additional 1,650 MBBS seats in the coming years," he said shortly after inaugurating Fortis Hospital at Vadapalani, reports the Hindu.

It was to enable students of government schools to become doctors that the State government has passed a Bill to provide 7.5% horizontal reservation in medical admissions, he added.

Palaniswami said the presence of government and private hospitals rendering advanced treatments has made Tamil Nadu as India's medical tourism state.

He said it was a matter of pride that when advanced countries with modern medical facilities were not able to manage Covid-19 pandemic, Indian doctors were able to contain it and save people.

Palaniswami also listed various welfare schemes implemented by the state government.
