Warangal: The issue of ragging has taken the spotlight in the state of Telangana after a tweet was posted by an MBBS student, complaining about ragging in the men's hostel.

The incident occurred on Monday, 15th November 2021, when a junior student from the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) posted a tweet alleging that a group of seniors were ragging him and a group of other students. The tweet quickly garnered attention on social media; the account through which it was tweeted, however, was soon deleted.

Tagging official Twitter handles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao, the student had alleged: "About 50 fourth-year students in an inebriated condition are ragging first-year students. Please help ASAP. Apart from forcing the juniors to consume alcohol, the senior students are also making the first-year students do unspeakable things. Exact location: new men's hostel 1, Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal (sic)."

Speaking to New Indian Express, KMC Principal Dr D Mohan Das dismissed the claims stating that the senior students were busy organising the freshers' day and that he did not receive any complaint, written or verbal, regarding a ragging incident. "However, we have instructed the anti-ragging panel to carry out an inquiry and submit a report," he added. A case has been registered to find the person who posted the tweet.

Mattewada police officials visited the campus on Monday and inquired about the incident. Inspector T Ganesh recently informed TOI, "We thoroughly examined the hostel premises, interacted with the third-year and fourth-year students. We tried to trace the number of the student who tweeted. However, could not trace the person. All hostellers said there was no such (ragging) incident." A central team from Hyderabad visited the KMC and also concluded that no such ragging incident took place.

The Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) is one of the medical schools of Telangana, located in Warangal under the gamut of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences. Currently it is one of the premier medical institutes of Telangana, taking in 200 students on merit each year through the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). The college has an intake of 200 MBBS students and 70 MD students and also offers other non-clinical courses.
