Hyderabad: Two women who underwent caesarean sections at the M N Area hospital in Malakpet died of alleged negligence by doctors. They were later shifted to Gandhi Hospital after they developed complications on Thursday.

The family of the deceased women protested at the M N Area Hospital.

Following this, the Telangana government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin and ordered them to form a committee to inquire into the incident.

P Devender, Assistant Commissioner of Police of Sultan Bazar Division said that the women were admitted to Gandhi Hospital for “better treatment”.

According to the family members of the two deceased women, the death of the duo was caused due to post-surgical complications after they delivered babies following a C-section procedure at the Malakpet hospital on January 11. Unfortunately, they died on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

Angered over the loss of their kin, the relatives accused the doctor of alleged medical negligence. A protest was staged outside the hospital on Friday.

“Their family members are alleging medical negligence,” ACP said.

ACP said that the bodies have been sent for postmortem and action will be taken accordingly.

Officials told The Indian Express, "The two women had underlying medical conditions that may have resulted in their death. We can’t say what caused their death until we have the postmortem examination reports. An expert committee will look into each and every aspect of medical care at the hospital and the case history of all patients as part of the probe into the two deaths and action will be taken as per the findings. Moreover, this probe is necessary to prevent any such future occurrences."

“The condition of two women, Sirivennela and Srivani, who underwent cesarean section at MN Area Hospital in Malakpet on 11th of January turned critical and they died within hours after they were shifted to Gandhi Hospital on Thursday. This is a straight case of negligence and all doctors and medical staff responsible for the same must be punished,” alleged Hyderabad District Congress Committee (DCC) President Sameer Waliullah.

Meanwhile, the doctors have denied the allegation of negligence and said that the procedures were done correctly, Devender said.

“Their post-mortem will be conducted and action will be taken accordingly. We spoke to doctors who denied any negligence,” the ACP said.

Based on a complaint from the victims’ families, the Chaderghat police registered a case of suspicious death and started an investigation.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
