Tripura: Errant patients allegedly spat on female doctor in COVID centre; Govt to inquire

Agartala - The West Tripura district administration has taken action against a group of COVID patients following an allegation of their audacious behaviour with an on-duty lady doctor two days ago at Saheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel Covid Care Centre.

The incident triggered serious reaction among the doctors, health workers and common people.

However, the patients admitted in Covid hospital at Agartala Govt Medical College and the positive cases have been taken to care centres in different locations of the state have complaints of inadequate treatment and support from the health staff.

A senior official of the district administration said, "We have seen some reports in social media and newspapers but no formal complaint yet to reach us. We shall institute an inquiry into the alleged incident and do the needful. However, on the other, we are getting enormous complaints from the patients for healthcare deficiency in the hospital and care centres."

According to allegations, a lady doctor had escorted five infected mothers from Tripura Medical College for getting them admitted to Bhagat Singh care centre on July 24 night. A group of patients lodged there had come down and raised objection for entering any more patients, as it has already been overcrowded but the doctor was desperately trying to convince them.

Meantime, allegedly a group of errant patient, in order to prevent any additional entry to their block collectively spat on her, the victim doctor told media adding that suddenly a youth went upstairs and expelled rinsed water from his mouth on the doctor and abused her. Finally, she could manage the entry of the patients but the incident, when reported to media, triggered a reaction.

The doctors' body demanded legal action against the patients for such behaviour.

Meanwhile, the patients admitted in Covid care centre alleged that at least eight patients were kept in a single room in the hostel and they don't get proper advice from the doctors and other amenities in need. The patients were treated like convicted persons. Food and whatever little medicine prescribed was just thrown inside and they are being ill-treated by the staff.

The same complaints have been coming from care centres all over the state and from the patients admitted in the hospital everyday, said a senior official of the state administration added, "The people who are brought to care centre and hospital, not suffering from the same viral load and complications. The government has provided all possible support to the doctors and health staff excepting them to serve the patients well at least to make them happy and if it is also not done such incidents are obvious."

In Covid situation, not only the doctors and health workers, officials of civil administration, police personnel and drivers have been doing duty round the clock in an adverse situation to serve the people of the state but if the patients are not happy then everything goes in vain, the official observed and added, "At least doctors are doing specific duty in a particular place but see multi-dimension of service of the policemen and civil administration. So, we expect the patients should get the best possible service."
