Uttar Pradesh - The chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery of King George Medical University (KGMU), Prof. AK Singh has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University. On the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, orders have been issued for the appointment of Dr AK Singh.

Prof. Dr AK Singh completed his MBBS in 1977 and MS in Surgery in 1981 at Allahabad College. He did MCH from plastic surgery in 1984 from KGMU and started a job as a lecturer at Kanpur Medical College. In 1986, he joined KGMU. His father, Prof. SR Singh was the Principal of Allahabad Medical College. 

Prof. AK Singh has the Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at KGMU as well as Controller of Examinations for a long time. He has vast experience of working in the fields of General Plastic, Craniofacial, Hand Surgery, Cosmetic surgery. Moreover, he also possesses degrees of  MNAMS, MNASc and has had a long experience of conducting medical UG to PG entrance examinations.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University being built in Chak Ganjari is one of the important projects of the state government. Government and private medical colleges, nursing colleges will now be affiliated to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University. Till now these colleges are affiliated to various universities of the state including KGMU. Therefore, the academic calendar of all, the time of examinations is also different.

As reported by TOI, the construction work of the medical campus will commence at Chak Ganjariya in Gosainganj soon. It is reported that 14 government medical institutions and 37 private facilities will be a subsidiary to the college during the first stage after its building is complete but the nursing and paramedical universities will get partnered with it in the subsequent stage.

The foundation stone for the establishment of the varsity was laid last year by PM Modi in December. Medical Dialogues had reported that Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University will be the umbrella university to grant affiliation to 13 state medical colleges, 22 private universities, two autonomous institutions, two non-autonomous institutes and 17 private dental colleges in the state. This medical university would be brought to execution, similar to the lines of APJ Abdul Kalam University, an umbrella university for engineering courses.
