RAID: Illegal Sex Determination Racket Busted in Agra, nurse, 6 others arrested

Agra: In recent raids at several locations in Agra, the Uttar Pradesh Police, and the Special Task Force (STF) have busted an illegal sex determination racket allegedly lead by a doctor and two others. Seven people including a nurse have been arrested in connection with the racket, however, the masterminds are still on the run.

A case under Sections 120B, 315 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act 1994 and 2002 have been registered by the Chief Medical Officer of Agra against the accused.

According to a recent media report in India Today, a doctor, one Pankaj Kumar, and Dheeraj were leading the group, six of which were arrested in the Raipura Ahir area of Achhnera and a nurse involved in this racket was detained in the Trans Yamuna colony. Police have also recovered four ultrasound machines, two cars, and other materials from the possession of the members. The group was reportedly earning more than Rs 2 lakhs per month.

During the raid in the house of one Yogendra Singh in Achhnera, Police found a portable ultrasound machine. The Police found three other machines in Achhnera and also arrested six people in this connection. On the other hand, the nurse was arrested from the house of Rajiv Kumar, who also runs the Hospital, SSP Agra Bablu Kumar told India Today.

Giving more information regarding the matter, STF team leader Hukum Singh informed that the nurse and Dheeraj were engaged in this sex determination business for the past two years.

The nurses, a native of Hathras and a single mother of two kids, was staying in the Tedi Baghiya area of Agra. Police have recovered mobile phones worth more than Rs 1 lakh from the nurse.

"They dealt through agents and then took the ultrasound machine to the pregnant woman's house for illegal sex determination. The ultrasound, which should normally cost around Rs 1,200, was charged at Rs 10,000. On average, they were doing about 100 sex determinations every month," police said.

Police are investigating the matter and trying to nab those on the run. During the investigation, the name of another hospital came to the fore and cops are working accordingly to nab the owner.

Meanwhile, taking note of such illegal practices, the Indian Medicos Association has taken a resolution to expel every doctor found involved in such practices and renounce all ties with the doctor in future.
