Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned an amount estimated to be around Rs 1.50 crore for financially assisting a woman doctor, who was working in the COVID ward despite being pregnant but contracted the infection and presently is in urgent need of a lung transplant costing around Rs 70 lakh.

As per a recent media report in Hindustan Times, the doctor has been identified as a 30-year-old PG student of Gynaecology Department who was extending her services at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Science.

The doctor served in the COVID ward during her pregnancy as well, however, she tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 infection in April. She recovered from COVID but her lungs got damaged. Hence, she needed 100 percent oxygen support. She delivered a baby girl in May and the baby's condition is stable.

The doctor is currently being monitored by a dedicated medical team of the institute. Her husband is also a resident doctor at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences

Meanwhile, the State government has assured aid and keeping in view that the cost of the treatment might flare up to crore, it has sanction an estimated amount of Rs 1.50 crore for lung transplant of the doctor.
"The state government has assured the financial help. We have estimated an expense of about Rs 70 lakh," Dr Srikesh Singh, spokesperson for Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Science stated.
"She is presently on ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation). We have assessed her condition jointly with external experts. It is the first case of its kind in the state," Singh told Hindustan Times.
"There are three centres in India conducting lung transplants and we are focusing first on the centre in Bengaluru," Dr Singh added.
