Gorakhpur AYUSH University to introduce telemedicine, cancer screening services

Gorakhpur: Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University is set to introduce telemedicine consultations, cancer screening and routine vaccination services as part of its efforts to develop into an integrated healthcare hub. The initiative aims to strengthen healthcare delivery by combining Ayurveda with modern medical services.
The project is being implemented under the guidance of Uttar Pradesh AYUSH Minister Dr Dayashankar Mishra Dayalu, who has instructed the university to strengthen healthcare services on the lines of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The university has also been directed to begin gynaecology outpatient services to improve access to healthcare for women, reports Jagran.
Vice-Chancellor Dr K. Ramachandra Reddy said the institution aims to provide comprehensive healthcare by integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine. Under the proposed system, patients visiting the outpatient department who show symptoms associated with cancer will undergo preliminary screening. Individuals requiring further evaluation will be referred to a dedicated telemedicine facility, where they can consult oncology specialists through video conferencing.

The university plans to screen patients presenting symptoms such as persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, non-healing oral ulcers or suspicious lumps. If required, arrangements will be made for biopsy procedures or referrals to higher medical centres within a week.
University officials said early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes for cancer patients. Alongside modern diagnostic and treatment methods, supportive Ayurvedic therapies may be incorporated to help manage treatment-related side effects and support overall well-being.
The institution is also preparing to launch immunisation services for pregnant women, nursing mothers, adolescent girls and newborns. Antenatal examinations and tetanus toxoid vaccination will be provided through AYUSH outpatient facilities. Newborns will receive essential vaccines, including BCG and Hepatitis-B, while follow-up immunisation schedules will also be supported.
Vaccination services for adolescent girls, including rubella and tetanus-diphtheria immunisation, are also planned. An agreement will be signed with the Health Department to facilitate implementation, including vaccine supply and deployment of auxiliary nursing personnel for service delivery at the university.
