NRS Ayurvedic College: 2 staff suspended, 2 relieved of duties in sexual harassment case

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated disciplinary proceedings following allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Dr Nori Rama Sastry Government (NRS) Ayurvedic Medical College, Vijayawada, suspending a medical officer and a lab technician, while relieving the college principal and professor of their duties.

The action follows formal complaints submitted by students, which the authorities reviewed and received inputs and recommendations from the Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Women.

According to officials from the Medical and Health Department, four staff members are under scrutiny in connection with the case, indicating a firm and uncompromising approach towards misconduct within academic institutions. Among them, a medical officer and a laboratory technician have been placed under suspension while further investigations are underway, reports T`OI.

Additionally, the college principal and Professor of the PSP department have been relieved of their duties and surrendered to the government, citing alleged negligence and failure to fulfill their responsibilities. Authorities stated that accountability is being examined at multiple administrative levels to ensure proper oversight.

Special Chief Secretary of the Medical and Health Department and AYUSH in-charge commissioner, Shri Ronanki Gopalakrishna, confirmed the developments, stating that the government acted promptly after reviewing the complaints and preliminary findings. He further noted that an internal inquiry has already been initiated within the institution.

To maintain transparency and ensure an unbiased probe, the department has approached NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha with a request to constitute an independent committee. This panel will conduct a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the allegations and is expected to submit a detailed report, reports Metro India.

The complaints were formally forwarded by the State Commission for Women, prompting immediate government action. Officials reiterated that further decisions will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing inquiries, reinforcing the government’s commitment to accountability and institutional integrity.
