Rampur Unani doctor served show cause notice for allegedly prescribing allopathic medicines

Rampur: The Health Department has initiated an inquiry against a Unani doctor posted in the AYUSH wing of the District Hospital in Rampur, following allegations that he advised a patient to purchase allopathic medicines from a private medical store. A show-cause notice has also been issued to the doctor based on the complaint.

The matter came to light after a video surfaced on social media in which a patient alleged that he had been prescribed medicines unavailable through the hospital's authorised supply. The patient claimed that while receiving treatment for a skin-related condition, he was directed to purchase medicines from a private medical store.

According to the complainant, he spent approximately Rs 580 on the prescribed medicines. The allegation raised concerns regarding adherence to treatment protocols within the AYUSH wing of the district hospital, prompting the Health Department to examine the circumstances surrounding the prescription, reports Amar Ujala.

Following the complaint, Chief Medical Officer Dr Deepa Singh confirmed that an investigation has been initiated into the matter. She stated that AYUSH practitioners are not authorised to prescribe allopathic medicines and are required to provide treatment strictly within the system of medicine for which they are qualified, registered and appointed. She added that the department takes such allegations seriously and is examining all relevant aspects of the case.

Dr Singh further stated that adequate stocks of Unani medicines are available in the AYUSH wing of the District Hospital and that patients are generally expected to receive medicines from the hospital's authorised supply. She noted that treatment and medicine distribution are governed by established guidelines and protocols. In view of the complaint, a formal explanation has been sought from the doctor concerned, and his response will be reviewed as part of the inquiry process.

The investigation is currently underway, and the Health Department has not reached any conclusion regarding the allegations. Officials said all facts and records related to the case are being examined before any decision is taken. Authorities added that further action, if required, will be determined on the basis of the inquiry findings and the explanation submitted by the doctor. Appropriate measures will be taken in accordance with applicable rules and departmental procedures.
