Delhi government sends notice to 89 hospitals suspected of carrying out female foeticide
New Delhi, Oct 15 : Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain on Thursday issued notice to 89 hospitals and nursing homes in the national capital suspected of carrying out female foeticide.
"We have found that sex ratio of new born babies at several hospitals and nursing homes in the city declined at an alarming rate," he told reporters.
"Sensing that some of such hospitals might be carrying female foeticide, we have issued notice to 89 hospitals where sex ratio of the new born babies is less than 800," minister said.
The sex ratio in the national capital is 896 per 1,000 males.
"We will lodge police complaint against the hospitals found indulging in female foeticide," he said.
The minister also said that the figures found after a survey by the government on sex ratio were alarming, with some hospitals and nursing homes reporting 300-400 girls over 1,000 boys at the time of birth.
"In the notice issued to these hospitals, we have asked them to explain the reason for adverse sex ratio of the babies at the time of birth," he said, adding that the hospitals were also asked to provide information on whether they were providing Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) facility.

It was noticed that these establishments had skewed sex ratio at birth in 2014-15 in the range of 285:1000 (F:M) to 788:1000 (F:M). Following table shows number of hospitals/Medical centers divided on the basis of sex ratio at birth (F:M) in 2014-15: | ||||||

The Directorate of Family Welfare, Govt. of NCT of Delhi has examined that the records of Birth and Death Registration of 89 hospitals/Medical centers in Delhi have below the average birth sex ratio in last year. On account of this, they have been directed to furnish following information within 10 days of issue of letter to individual centers/hospitals: |
- The reason for adverse sex ratio at the hospitals
- Whether centers/hospitals are registered with nursing home cell, DHS?
- Whether centers/hospitals are providing MTP facility.
- Whether centers/hospitals are registered under MTP& PC & PNDT Act?
- In case centers/hospitals are not providing facilities under MTP & PNDT,
centers/hospitals are directed to provide the details of the centers where patents are being referred for MTP and ultrasonography.
