An Instagram post claims that Jayphal and Haldi Cures Pigmentation and Dark Circles in Just 2–3 Days. The claim is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram post it is claimed that Jayphal and Haldi Cures Pigmentation and Dark Circles in Just 2–3 Days. In the reel by ansari_healthtips, it is said, "For pigmentation, dark circles, and the dark patches under the eyes, there is a very effective remedy, and it will take only two to three days for you to start seeing results.

For this, you need to take nutmeg (jayphal). Soak the nutmeg in water for about 10 minutes. After that, take a stone or any rough surface, add a little raw milk, and start rubbing the nutmeg on it for one to two minutes.

Now, if you want to see faster results, you can also mix a little turmeric. This will prepare your paste. You have to use this every night by applying it on your face. After half an hour, wash it off. In the morning, wash your face with fresh cold water.

This remedy is very effective."

The claim can be accessed here.

Fact Check

The claim is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim.

What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to the coloration of the skin, primarily determined by the presence and amount of melanin, a pigment produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. Melanin synthesis and distribution vary significantly among individuals due to factors like genetics, UV exposure, and certain medications. Pigmentation can appear excessive (hyperpigmentation) or diminished (hypopigmentation) depending on underlying conditions.

What are the Causes of skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation abnormalities can arise from several causes, including:

  • Genetic factors – e.g., albinism
  • UV exposure – can increase melanin production
  • Hormonal changes – such as in melasma
  • Autoimmune disorders – such as vitiligo
  • Endocrine disorders – like Addison’s disease
  • Inflammatory skin conditions – such as eczema or acne vulgaris
  • Post-inflammatory responses – leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Drug interactions – certain drugs can alter melanin synthesis or skin appearance

Management of skin pigmentation

Management strategies for pigmentation disorders involve a combination of:

1. Topical and oral medications:

  • Tyrosinase inhibitors – reduce melanin production
  • Anti-inflammatory agents
  • Antioxidants

2. Herbal remedies

3. Marine-derived treatments

4. Cosmetic products

5. Clinical supervision

What are Dark Circles?

Dark circles, also known as periorbital hyperpigmentation in medical terms, are a common skin concern that appear as brown or dark brown patches around the eyes. They usually form in a round or semicircular shape and can affect both eyes. While not a medical issue, dark circles can impact a person’s confidence and overall well-being. Several factors can contribute to dark circles, including genetics, excess pigmentation, and skin inflammation caused by conditions like allergies and dermatitis. Other causes include fluid buildup around the eyes and ageing-related skin changes like sagging and tear trough formation. Environmental factors such as lack of sleep, stress, alcohol consumption, and smoking have also been linked, though not scientifically proven.

What are the Health Benefits of Jayphal and Haldi?

Nutmeg exhibits a range of beneficial properties, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, immunoprotective, anticarcinogenic, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflmmatory activities.
Turmeric, commonly known as Haldi is widely recognized for its vibrant orange-yellow hue and distinctive flavor, primarily due to its active compound curcumin. It possesses notable anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. In Ayurvedic practice, turmeric is traditionally used to manage a range of respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, and bronchial hyperreactivity, along with liver ailments, loss of appetite, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, cough, sinusitis, and nasal discharge.

Can Jayphal and Haldi Cure Pigmentation and Dark Circles in Just 2–3 Days?

There is no scientific evidence that applying jayphal (nutmeg) and haldi (turmeric) can remove pigmentation or dark circles within 2–3 days. While turmeric has mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, neither ingredient can produce such rapid skin-lightening or pigmentation reversal.

Turmeric contains the bioactive compound curcumin, known for its wide-ranging health benefits. A review by
Siddhartha S. Ghosh et. al.
highlighted curcumin’s potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, along with other therapeutic effects, suggesting that it maybe a promising addition to treatment approaches for chronic kidney disease.
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been also widely explored for its diverse therapeutic and industrial applications. A review by Javad Sharifi-Rad et. al.
highlights curcumin’s role in promoting health and preventing disease. The study emphasizes its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective effects.

Nutmeg possesses several beneficial health properties. In their research, Namra Naeem and colleagues reported that nutmeg may have potential applications in pharmaceutical products due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

It can be concluded that there is no scientific evidence or established medical consensus supporting the effectiveness of the topical application of turmeric and nutmeg on the skin.

Responding to the claim Dr. Padmaja, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad said, "Skin pigmentation, including conditions such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sun-induced dark spots, develops due to excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This process usually occurs gradually due to triggers such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, acne, or skin irritation. Because pigmentation develops over time, it also cannot disappear within just two or three days, especially through home remedies alone.

Ingredients like turmeric (Curcuma longa) are known to contain curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In some skincare products, turmeric extracts may help reduce inflammation or support overall skin health. Similarly, nutmeg (jayphal) has been used in traditional remedies and may contain compounds with mild antimicrobial or antioxidant effects. However, there is no reliable scientific evidence proving that applying nutmeg and turmeric can eliminate pigmentation within a few days.

In fact, applying raw kitchen ingredients directly on the skin may sometimes cause irritation, allergic reactions, or contact dermatitis, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin. Skin irritation itself can worsen pigmentation rather than improve it.

Effective management of pigmentation usually requires consistent skincare and medical guidance. Dermatologists often recommend sun protection with broad-spectrum sunscreen, as ultraviolet radiation is a major trigger for pigmentation. Depending on the cause, treatments may include topical depigmenting agents such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, retinoids, or hydroquinone, along with procedures like chemical peels or laser therapy when appropriate. These treatments work gradually and typically take weeks to months to show visible improvement.

While turmeric and other natural ingredients may be part of traditional skincare practices, they should not be considered quick cures for pigmentation.

Anyone dealing with persistent dark spots or uneven skin tone should consult a qualified dermatologist, who can identify the underlying cause and recommend safe, evidence-based treatment rather than relying on unverified internet remedies."

Dr Asma Akhlaq, Consultant - Dermatology, CK BIRLA HOSPITALS Jaipur in a conversation with us said, "Pigmentation conditions such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation develop due to excess melanin production triggered by sun exposure, inflammation, hormones, or acne, and they typically take weeks to months to improve, even with medical treatment. While turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, there is no scientific evidence that applying nutmeg or turmeric can remove pigmentation within a few days. In some cases, applying raw ingredients may even irritate the skin. Persistent pigmentation should be evaluated by a dermatologist for appropriate treatment."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The claim that jayphal (nutmeg) and haldi (turmeric) can cure pigmentation and dark circles within 2–3 days is FALSE. While turmeric may provide mild skincare benefits and nutmeg may act as a gentle exfoliant in some traditional remedies, neither ingredient can eliminate pigmentation or dark circles in such a short time.

Hence, the claim is FALSE.
