New Delhi: There will be no more supplementary batches for the MBBS course, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) stated in its recently released MBBS curriculum.

In order to ensure this, NMC has announced that the process of conducting supplementary examinations and declaration of results shall be processed within 3-6 weeks from the date of declaration of the results of the main examination for every professional year.

However, if any candidate fails the supplementary examination as well, he/she shall join the batch of the next academic year, NMC has stated.

These changes have been issued by the Apex medical education regulatory body in the recently released CBME curriculum for the MBBS course. Medical Dialogues had recently reported that following the publication of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 in the official Gazette on June 02, 2023, the UG Board of NMC has now issued the new curriculum for MBBS students.

Issuing a circular in this regard on June 12, 2023, the Director of the UGMEB, Shambhu Sharan Kumar informed, "All previously issued Notifications/circulars/clarifications shall now be void and superseded by these new guidelines."

These new guidelines including the new CBME curriculum for the MBBS students "shall be applicable to all the admission made in MBBS course in a medical college in the academic year 2023-24."

While specifying the phase-wise training and time distribution for professional development, NMC clarified that at the end of each professional year, University examination will be held. If any student fails to clear the University examination, he/she will have to appear in the supplementary examination.

"Supplementary examinations and declaration of results shall be processed within 3-6 weeks from the date of declaration of the results of the main examination for every professional year, so that the candidates, who pass, can join the main batch for progression," NMC UG Board clarified in the recently released CBME curriculum for MBBS course.

Doing away with the practice of supplementary batch, NMC further mentioned, "If the candidate fails in the supplementary examination of first MBBS, he shall join the batch of next academic /subsequent year. There shall be no supplementary batches. Partial attendance of examination in any subject shall be counted as an attempt."

In this regard, NMC has also clarified that-

  • A candidate who fails in the First Professional examination, shall not be allowed to join the Second Professional.
  • A candidate who fails in the second Professional examination. shall be allowed to join the third Professional Part I training, however he shall not be allowed to appear for the examination unless he has passed second professional examination.
  • A candidate who fails in the third Professional (Part I) examination shall be allowed to join third Professional part II training, however he shall not be allowed to appear for the examination unless he has passed second professional examination.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year, after releasing the new Competency-Based Medical Education for MBBS course curriculum, NMC had directed the medical institutes across the country to merge the old and new batch of MBBS students from the current academic year of that time so that the basic elements of the CBME learning could be imparted to the medicos.

Back then, NMC had directed all the Registrars of the Universities and the Deans/Principals of the medical colleges to complete the required formalities with regard to amalgamation of old and new batch of MBBS students in the new CBME Course Curriculum on priority.

This year, after the publication of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 in the official Gazette on June 02, 2023, NMC UG Board has released the new CBME curriculum. In the curriculum, NMC has clearly mentioned that there will be no supplementary batches for the MBBS course.

Meanwhile, in the recently notified GMER 2023, NMC also mentioned that the students shall have to undergo training as per the UGMEB guidelines. Setting a limit regarding the number of attempts to clear the MBBS examination, NMC has clarified, "Provided under no circumstances the student shall be allowed more than four (04) attempts for first year (First Professional MBBS) and no student shall be allowed to continue undergraduate medical course after nine (09) years from the date of admission into the course, mentioned the Regulations."
