NMC directs medical colleges to celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2025 on May 31, Details
New Delhi- In observance of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) on May 31, 2025, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed medical colleges and institutions to actively participate in raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use. The global event, celebrated every year on May 31, draws attention to the harmful health impacts of tobacco use, which are major contributors to the burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic lung diseases.
On this, NMC has issued a public notice stating that to draw attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable deaths and diseases it causes, the WHO Member States, vide World Health Assembly, called for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) every year on 31 May, it mentioned
Hence, NMC has ordered all the Medical Colleges/Institutions under the administrative domain of NMC to actively celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2025 on the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products".
The notice has also suggested activities for the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2025.
Below are the activities-
1 Organizing lectures, panel discussions and debates around the WNTD 2025 theme.
2 Hosting health screenings for tobacco-related illnesses in OPD settings.
3 Hosting IEC activities such as poster-making, short film, or essay competitions on tobacco control and engaging students in social media campaigns and outreach activities.
4 Promoting tobacco-free campus (including Tobacco Free Hostels) policies and displaying WNTD 2025 banners.
5 "No Tobacco Pledge" Ceremony for the healthcare professionals and patients.
6 Conducting community awareness programs on the harms of tobacco use and the availability of cessation services.
Medical Dialogues earlier reported that, through a notice, the National Medical Commission asked the medical colleges under its purview to submit action taken report regarding the implementation of the measures on "Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan", launched by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment.
