NMR Registration: NMC tells State Medical Councils to Verify FMGs Medical Degrees from Foreign Institutes
New Delhi: Amid the ongoing registration of doctors in the National Medical Register (NMR), the National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed the State Medical Councils to confirm the medical degrees from the concerned foreign medical colleges/universities.
Writing to the State Medical Councils (SMCs), the Secretary of NMC, Dr. B Srinivas has asked to seek confirmation regarding the medical degrees from abroad through the concerned Indian Embassy/High Commission either before granting permanent registration or before recommending them for registration on the National Medical Register. The Apex Medical Commission's directions come with the aim to weed out the fake medical registrations from the NMR.
NMC introduced the NMR to have a consolidated list of allopathic doctors practising in the country. This dynamic database will be a central repository of all registered doctors and the verification of the authenticity of these doctors will be done by Aadhaar IDs.
To complete the registration process on the NMR, the doctors need to have their Aadhaar ID, digital copy of their MBBS degree certificate and registration certificate from the State Medical Council/Medical Council of India.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC had specified that all the MBBS doctors who are registered on the Indian Medical Register (IMR) would have to register again on the NMR and it had further clarified in a public notice that all medical colleges/institutes, State Medical Councils (SMCs) are inter-linked on the portal.
Some of the data in the NMR would be visible to the public and others would only be visible to the Ethics Board of NMC, SMC, National Board of Examinations (NBE) and medical institutes and RMPs as per the requirements.

Now, the Apex Medical Commission has asked the State Medical Councils to verify the medical degrees of both the Indian and Foreign Medical Graduates to rule out the registration of fake medical degrees.
"As you are aware. the process of granting of unique National Medical Register (NMR) IDs to the Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) has started recently. The NMR ID is being given by the National Medical Commission, solely based on the verification done by the concerned State Medical Council (SMC)," NMC Secretary Dr. Srinivas mentioned in its advisory issued to the State Medical Councils.
"In this connection, I would like to mention that one of the purposes of launching NMR was to rule out registration of fake medical degree holders. To this effect. thorough verification is supposed to be done by the SMCs in respect of RMPs. who has obtained their medical degrees in India. however, it should be felt that same exercise should also be undertaken in respect of RMPs who obtained their medical degree from outside India," the Commission further mentioned.
Accordingly, NMC advised that "...the SMCs should invariably seek confirmation of medical degrees from the concerned foreign medical college/university through concerned Indian Embassy/High Commission either before granting Permanent Registration or before recommending them for registration in NMR." The Commission requested the full cooperation and support from the SMCs in this regard.
