MCI replacement: Group of Ministers clear National Medical Commission Bill
New Delhi: The government is finally making some strides with the proposed Bill to replace Medical Council of India, the apex medical body governing the medical sector. Reports are now coming in that the said bill has met the approval of the Group of Ministers ( GoM) led by the finance minister Shri Arun Jaitley. With the GoM's nod, the health ministry has moved the cabinet note on the said Bill.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that with an intention to reform the medical sector, Niti Aayog, had proposed the replacement of Medical Council of India with a new body, National Medical Commission. A bill in this regard, The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2017 was put under the public domain.

With strong objections raised by many bodies in the medical fraternity, on the issue of lack of elected members to the commission, as well as proposed National Exit Test after MBBS, the bill was then forwarded to the GoM to look into the bill as well as the concerns of the stakeholders and reach a consensus.

Tribune reports that the new NMC Bill cleared by the GoM, is learnt to have proposed an increase in the strength of commission members from 19 (originally suggested by NITI Aayog) to 29. The new Bill then says nine of the 29 NMC members can come through an election and the rest will be selected.
Exit Exam To become a Reality
With the bill moving forward with the government, National Exit Exam after MBBS exam is soon going to be a reality. Â As per the bill, all MBBS graduates will have to clear to get practicing licences to practice and getting their names added to the medical register. It is proposed to merge this exam to post graduate entrance exam as this exam will also be used as NEET for postgraduate admissions
