2,479 MS Ophthalmology seats for 2026-27, 339 in Karnataka, 291 Maharashtra: NMC PG medical seat matrix

New Delhi: In its recently released seat matrix, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has listed a total of 2,479 M.S. Ophthalmology seats across medical colleges in India for the academic year 2026-27.
The seats are distributed across 30 states/Union Territories, and the highest number of M.S. Ophthalmology seats is 339 in Karnataka, followed by Maharashtra with 291 seats and Tamil Nadu with 246 seats.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Sikkim have no M.S. Ophthalmology seats listed in the matrix.
Medical Dialogues earlier reported that the NMC released a seat matrix on September 29 showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. However, the NMC clarified that the latest seat matrix does not include seats related to applications received for an increase in the intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
As per the list, Uttar Pradesh has 241 MS Ophthalmology seats, Andhra Pradesh has 169 seats, Gujarat has 150 seats, Telangana has 159 seats, Madhya Pradesh has 112 seats, West Bengal has 101 seats, Kerala has 89 seats, and Bihar has 68 seats.
Delhi has 54 seats, Odisha has 53, Haryana has 46, Puducherry has 39 seats, Jammu and Kashmir has 32 seats, Punjab has 32 seats, Assam has 30 seats, Chhattisgarh has 29 seats, Uttarakhand has 28 seats, Jharkhand has 11 seats, Himachal Pradesh has 10 seats, Manipur has 9 seats, Chandigarh and Goa have 5 seats each, and Tripura has 5 seats.
Among the states and Union Territories with seats, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has the lowest number with just 1 M.S. Ophthalmology seat, followed by Meghalaya with 2 seats and Dadra and Nagar Haveli with 3 seats.
