Altogether 1250 MBBS Seats being added in Telangana
Hyderabad: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Telangana, 1250 MBBS seats are going to be added to the seat matrix of the State.
Among these 1,250 seats, 600 seats would be added in the government medical colleges. All of these six medical colleges in Vikarabad, Bhupalpally, Jangaon, Khammam, Kamareddy and Asifabad will add 100 MBBS seats each.
Apart from this, 450 MBBS seats would be added in the new private medical colleges including Neelima Institute of Medical Sciences under Anurag University, Father Colombo Institute of Medical Science and CMR Institute under KNRUHS.
Another 200 seats will be added to the seat matrix of the State as the seats have been increased in two existinare g medical colleges including Prathima Relief and RVM Medical College.
Earlier this month, Medical Dialogues reported that another 950 to 1000 additional MBBS seats would be added in Telangana from the academic year 2023-2024.

Confirming this development, the senior health officials of the State had assured that these additional MBBS seats will be added in the government medical colleges since NMC is encouraging all the State governments to set up more medical colleges. Apart from the MBBS seats, 50 additional PG superspecialty seats are also going to be added in the government medical colleges in the State.
Recently, Telangana Medical and Health Minister T Harish Rao had informed the Assembly that presently a total of 42 medical colleges are available in the state. This includes 17 government medical colleges, one ESI and 24 private medical colleges.
The Minister said that a total number of 6,715 MBBS seats are available in the state now. Of them, 2,790 are in Government medical colleges, 53 in ESI medical college and 3,800 in private medical colleges.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, altogether 1,250 MBBS seats are being added to the seat matrix of Telangana, and with the increase of seats, the State will have 8,140 MBBS seats.
The latest data from the State health department reveals that currently, Telangana has the highest MBBS seat-to-population ratio. In the State, 19 MBBS seats are available for a population of one lakh. Regarding this ratio, Karnataka comes in the second position as there are 17 seats available per lakh population.
However, considering the increase of seats an academic in the State expressed concern regarding the quality of medical students and added, “Last year also, Telangana saw a steep rise in new seats, leading to drastic cut-off variation with other states. For instance in AP, the last student to qualify NEET scored 530 marks out of 720, but in state a student who scored 80 marks less, 449 on 720, also qualified.”
“The government could fix the quality issue by ensuring strict MBBS education and quality teachers in these new colleges so that any underperforming student in entrance also matches up to the quality of doctors in the state,” he further mentioned.
