Indira Gandhi govt dental college Jammu MDS seats doubled to 28

Srinagar: Taking a significant step towards strengthening dental education in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently decided to double the Postgraduate (MDS) seats at the Indira Gandhi Government Dental College (IGGDC), Jammu.
The annual intake capacity for the 2026-27 academic session will now rise from 14 to 28.
With the recent approval, the number of seats in several specialisations has now been increased to three, and additionally, extra seats have been added in certain selected subjects.
According to the DailyExcelsior media news report, an official 'Letter of Intent' followed by a 'Letter of Permission' have been issued by the Ministry in this regard. Through this letter, it has been conveyed that this increase covers key specialisations, including Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontology, and Oral Pathology and Microbiology.
This approval has been granted under Section 10(A) of the Dentists Act, 1948, and shall be subject to annual renewal based on compliance with prescribed norms, including infrastructure, faculty strength, clinical workload, and academic standards.
However, officials stated that this expansion would significantly reduce the number of dental graduates from the Union Territory who seek postgraduate seats elsewhere, while also increasing the availability of specialised dental care in the region.
Meanwhile, officials have made it clear that any deviation from the prescribed conditions, particularly in the matter of admissions, will invite action under the relevant provisions of the Act.
The MDS program at IGGDC Jammu was initiated in 2020, with the admission of two students in each of the seven specialisations. However, the first batch received recognition in January 2024, paving the way for its further expansion.
With the doubling of admission intake, IGGDC Jammu is poised to emerge as a robust hub for advanced dental training, contributing to both human resource development and improved standards of patient care in Jammu and Kashmir.
This decision signifies a major expansion in the PG training capacity at this premier dental institute in the Jammu region. Also, expected to enhance access to advanced dental education while also strengthening tertiary oral health services. This step also aligns with the Central Government's broader efforts to augment the capacity of medical and dental education across India.
