Doon Medical College Strengthens Anti-Ragging Measures, 30 doctors deployed to monitor situation

Dehradun: Clarifying that instances of ragging would not be tolerated, the Government Doon Medical College and Hospital has strengthened its anti-ragging measures at the institute.
Already the college has deployed a team of 30 doctors to monitor the situation. Apart from this, the college authorities have made separate hostel and classroom arrangements for the first-year MBBS students, adds TOI.
The college authorities further informed that wardens and security guards also have been informed about the issue and they have been directed to remain alert. Apart from this, teachers and mentors have been deputed for this purpose. Besides, the college has also made provisions for counselling related to all the issues including ragging.
This comes after recently the allegations of ragging at Haldwani Medical College came to the light. Medical Dialogues had recently reported that altogether 44 MBBS students belonging to Government Medical College in Haldwani were fined around Rs 11 lakh for ragging their juniors. While one student was expelled from the hostel and was asked to pay Rs 50,000 as a fine, the other 43 students were directed to pay a fine Rs 25,000 each.
Earlier this year, GMC Haldwani faced similar allegations of ragging when a suspected ragging video, showing students with tonsured heads walking in queue with hands behind their backs shocked the social media.
At that time, along with the investigation by the authorities, a division bench of Uttarakhand High Court had also ordered a probe and directed the police to complete the inquiry within two weeks and register it as a criminal case.

Facing similar allegations of ragging, seven students of 2019-2020 MBBS batch belonging to Srinagar Medical College in Uttarakhand were suspended by their principal. These medicos had allegedly ragged around 40 junior students by forcing them to strip on the hostel terrace on November 11.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, amid such a situation, Government Doon Medical College and Hospital has strengthened its anti-ragging measures by deploying a team of 30 doctors to monitor the situation. Apart from this, the authorities have ensured that the first year students are staying in a separate hostel and taught in separate classrooms.
Speaking about this, the Principal of the institute, Dr. Ashutosh Sayana told TOI, "We have an anti-ragging committee to handle such complaints. In addition, we have an anti-ragging squad that conducts random inspections and checks. A team of 30 doctors has been deployed to stay on the lookout for any untoward incidents."
Clarifying that strict action will be taken against anyone found to be involved in ragging activities, the principal further added, "We have kept first year students separate in the hostel and classrooms to avoid such incidents. No complaint will be taken lightly."
It has been claimed by the college officials that no major ragging incidents have been reported at the college. However, last year one MBBS student had allegedly been ragged and in this regard he had also lodged a complaint against the concerned seniors. Accordingly, the matter had been posted on the CM portal by the college authorities. Later in November 2019, the college had expelled three students from the hostels after similar allegations of ragging had been made against them.
