GMC Konni plans to commence admission from this year, NMC satisfied with preparations
Pathanamthitta: The medical aspirants in Kerala might get the chance to avail the MBBS seats in the newly established Government Medical College in Konni since the college is making all the efforts for commencing classes for UG medical students from the ongoing academic year and even the National Medical Commission (NMC) has expressed its satisfaction over the preparations.
In fact, recently the Health Minister Veena George further hinted at the possibility of a written assurance from the Apex Medical Body NMC very soon.
Referring to the positive developments at the medical college, the Minister claimed that those were results of the emergency interventions made by the State Government, adds The Hindu.
Already, the college authorities have completed the recruitment process for filling up the posts for teaching and non-teaching staff, set up an anatomy lab and a museum. Besides, the college library has been equipped with books, specimens, study materials for students and a tank for keeping cadavers for the Anatomy department and reagents for the lab etc.

Medical Dialogues had last year reported that the Medical Education Department of Kerala had sought NMC nod for commencing MBBS admission in GMC Konni. For this, the State had also initiated the process of attaching the Pathanamthitta General Hospital to the new medical college, as part of new central government project which required upgrading the district and general hospitals to medical colleges, in an attempt to get approval from the NMC. However, the Apex medical commission is yet to give its permission for the GMC Konni.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the Apex medical commission recently expressed its satisfaction over the preparations at GMC Konni for commencing MBBS admissions in the ongoing academic year.
Mentioning about the possibility of NMC's written assurance soon, the State Health Minister Veena George told the daily, "Development works worth over Rs 250 crore have been carried out at the hospital since this government came to power. Environmental clearance has been obtained and a Hospital Development Committee (HDS) constituted to ensure smooth running of the institution.''
