JJ Hospital Grant Medical College plans to offer 3 new PG medical courses with 4 seats each, NMC accepts proposal
Mumbai: Bringing good news to the Postgraduate medical aspirants in Maharashtra, the Mumbai based Grant Medical College is planning to add 3 new Postgraduate medical courses in specialties including geriatric medicine, emergency medicine, and immunohematology transfusion medicine.
In fact, the college has already submitted a proposal for four seats in each of these disciplines to the National Medical Commission (NMC), which has accepted the proposal. However, the final nod from NMC will come only after an inspection by the Commission.
If NMC gives its nod then Grant Medical College will also become the first public medical college and hospital offering PG medical course in geriatric medicine.
Apart from this, the college has also applied for increasing 126 PG medical seats in the existing specialities.
Established back in 1845, Grant Medical College is one of the oldest medical institutes in South Asia. It is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), and it is also associated with Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals. At present, there are a total number of 234 PG medical seats and 17 more seats for Super Speciality courses.

As per the latest media report by Mid Day, last week the college sent a proposal to NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body seeking permission for 4 seats each in 3 new PG medical courses in Emergency medicine, Geriatric medicine, and ImmunoHematology transfusion medicine.
While commenting on the matter, the Dean of Sir JJ Hospital, Dr. Pallavi Saple told the daily, "These all are PG seats and each course will have 4 seats. Last week we sent the proposal to start the three courses to the National Medical Council (NMC) and they accepted it. Now they will do an inspection and accordingly take the decision on the courses. These courses will give more options to PG aspirants and help patients suffering from related illnesses to be treated at the hospital."
Referring to the proposal for adding more seats in the existing specialities, Dr. Saple added, "We have also applied seeking the increase of existing PG seats of all branches in the hospital and college. We have sent the proposal to add 126 seats. NMC has done the inspection. I hope we soon get the permission to increase our seat strength."
In this regard, the former director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Dr Pravin Singhare told the daily, "If we talk about the new courses, the BMC medical colleges already had them. But in the government setup, they were never thought of. I would like to congratulate the dean who has decided to start these new courses."
