17 years later- BRD medical college MBBS student clears final year exams

MBBS Examination
Gorakhpur: After remaining stuck in the final year of the MBBS course for nearly 17 years, a student of BRD Medical College cleared his supplementary examinations and will now be able to begin his internship.
The student, a resident of the Jangha area of Gorakhpur district, had taken admission to the MBBS course in 2009. However, he remained unable to clear two final-year subjects, Medicine and Surgery, despite multiple attempts over the years.
As per a latest media report by News 18 Hindi, the student was supposed to clear the final year, which consists of four papers- medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and gynaecology. While he passed gynaecology and paediatrics in three attempts, he was unable to succeed in medicine and surgery.
The student reportedly reappeared for the final-year examination in 2024. However, his result was withheld by the university for around one and a half years. Following the delay, he approached the High Court seeking relief.
After the court’s intervention, the university released the result in March 2026, but the student was again declared failed. He later appeared for the supplementary examination conducted in April 2026.
Now, as per the result released by Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University on Friday, the student has passed both subjects and completed his MBBS course after 17 years. He is now eligible to start his internship.
According to the National Medical Commission Regulations, a student who joins the MBBS course must complete and pass the entire degree within 9 years from the date of admission. Apart from this, the commission also specified that the students shall not be allowed more than four attempts for the first year.
Speaking on the matter, BRD Medical College Principal Dr Ram Kumar Jaiswal said, "The university has not yet released the results of two other students who took the exam in 2024. Based on the High Court order, a letter has been sent to the university requesting the release of the results. However, the results of both students have not yet been declared."
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that while the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules mandate that MBBS students must complete the course within 9 years from the date of admission, three students of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, admitted during the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) era remained stuck in the course for over 20 years after failing in certain subjects.
However, the college released the results of one student following a High Court order, while two others are still awaiting their results. The three students belong to the 1998, 2009 and 2010 batches and had enrolled in the MBBS course at BRD Medical College. However, due to failure to clear certain subjects in examinations, long delays in pending examinations, result declaration and regulatory hurdles, their academic progress remained stalled for over two decades.
