2-year MBBS student who consumed toilet cleaner dies during treatment, family alleges ragging

Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old second-year MBBS student at the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur allegedly consumed toilet cleaner and died during treatment at the Lala Lajpat Rai hospital on Wednesday.

In light of the circumstances, the cause of the death is unclear and could only be determined after the release of the post-mortem reports.

On the other hand, in their grief over their daughter's death, the family has claimed that ragging may have prompted her to take such drastic measures. It came to the fore, that the student had earlier informed his father about getting ragged at the campus nearly seven months ago.

According to the father, a sub-inspector in the state police department claimed, "About seven months ago, she told me that some seniors in the college had cut her long hair. In fact, two days before she was admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital, she had told me that the college students used to make fun of her for some disability she had since birth.”

Although the family members have made allegations against the senior students of the college about alleged ragging on the campus, the issue is not yet confirmed.

The student was living in a rented house in the city away from her family and on June 17, two youths got her admitted to the LLR hospital. Both the youths had disappeared mysteriously after admitting her to the hospital.

The student’s family, which had maintained silence till now, is now demanding action and investigation into the matter.

Denying the accusations made by the family members, the Principal of GSVM Medical College, Dr Sanjay Kala told TOI "This is not a case of ragging. If she was facing any such problems, she or her parents should have complained to the college management."

The Swaroop Nagar police have sent the body for post-mortem.

Station in-charge of Swaroop Nagar police station, Rajesh Verma said that further action will be taken in the matter based on the complaint of the family members.

GSVM Medical College Principal Dr Sanjay Kala said that the 23-year-old female student was an MBBS second-year student and was allotted a hostel on the college campus itself.

However, going by the findings, it came to light that she used to live in rented accommodation in Kalyanpur.

The family members also came to know about this fact only after she was admitted to LLR Hospital on June 17.

According to doctors, the student’s intestines suffered major complications. “She died due to multiorgan failure,” they said.
