8 Telangana medical colleges with 800 MBBS seats to begin admissions from next academic year
Hyderabad: In a major boost to undergraduate medical education in Telangana, eight medical colleges have been approved by the state government reported to start functioning from the next academic year 2024-25 in each district.
Around 800 MBBS seats have been added to the state's existing seat matrix for undergraduate courses which will provide career opportunities to medical aspirants residing in each district. With this, the total available seats in government medical colleges will rise to 4,590 MBBS seats.
The upcoming medical colleges will be established in Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Warangal, Medak, Yadadri Bhongir, Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri.

The dream to establish medical colleges in 33 districts will soon become reality with the government sanctioning eight medical colleges from the next year and nine medical colleges already functioning in Telangana.
Announcing the good news on Twitter on Wednesday, Health Minister Harish Rao said "One Medical College for One district, a vision of Hon’ble CM Shri KCR is going to be a reality. Here are the new 8 medical colleges approved by state government adding to the existing medical colleges."
"In tune to the vision of Arogya Telangana these colleges will foster more opportunities for students to pursue medical education and further enhance healthcare services in districts," he added.
A Government Order (GO) issued by the Secretary, S.A.M Rizvi of the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare in this regard mentioned: "Government after careful examination of the matter, hereby accord administrative sanction for establishment of eight government medical colleges and government general hospital with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats each."
The construction work of the college building is entrusted to the Roads & Buildings department and the works of government general hospital buildings and procurement of equipment and furniture are entrusted to TSMSIDC, Hyderabad.
"Direction of Medical Education, Hyderabad, Managing Director, TSMSIDC, Hyderabad, Engineer-in-Chief, Roads & Buildings Department shall take necessary action in the matter accordingly," the order reads.
Telangana currently holds the top position in the country with 22 MBBS seats per lakh population and the second position with 7.5 PG seats per lakh. In the year 2023-24, Telangana alone will account for 43 percent of the newly available medical seats nationwide, with 900 seats out of a total of 2,118.
Before 2014, the state had a mere three government medical colleges. However, an impressive total of 29 medical colleges have been established in just nine years.
Talking about this, Rao told SF, “The government is taking the necessary steps to commence classes with 100 MBBS seats in each college from next year. With the establishment of these eight new government medical colleges, the government will achieve its goal of having at least one medical college in every district. Upon completion, the total number of government medical colleges in the state will reach 34."
“Previously, the medical sector faced challenges under the joint Andhra Pradesh rule, leading to numerous lives being lost due to inadequate and delayed medical facilities. It was a distressing situation where individuals had to travel long distances to reach hospitals like Gandhi, Osmania, and NIMS, often resulting in tragic outcomes. Furthermore, aspiring medical students struggled to access MBBS education,” he added.
