Anonymous Email raises red alert for ragging at GMC Amritsar
New Delhi: After a mystery email to the anti-ragging helpline raised red alerts for ragging of first-year medicos at Government Medical College, Amritsar, the National anti-ragging helpline forwarded the same to the college authorities on Monday to solve the issue.
Although the Principal of the medical college thoroughly followed the procedure including securing the CCTV footage and informing the Police, he has shared his doubts that the incident might be an inter-group rivalry. The College authorities have also looked into the footage and didn't find anything suspicious, reports TOI.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, an unnamed email sent to the anti-ragging helpline on Sunday claimed that students were being asked to remove their clothes and perform actions meant to shame them. The person who wrote the email, clarified that the identities of the sender as well as the students are being kept hidden.
"Am a first-year MBBS student. I want to raise a complaint against our immediate seniors for ragging. For the past few days, they call us at 1 am by saying this is an intro for freshers. And then start humiliating us... by using abusive words and phrases," the email stated as reported by TOI. the rest of the email described in detail regarding the graphic actions that the students were asked to perform.
After the email reached the National anti-ragging helpline on Sunday, the college authorities were immediately informed about the matter. Although the Principal of the medical college immediately secured the CCTV footage of one week and also informed the police about the issue by forwarding the email, he has informed the daily that the incident might be an inter-group rivalry.
While sharing his views regarding the matter, Principal Rajiv Devgan told TOI, "This looks like a fraudulent email by a group of students. There was a function on campus which one of the groups was opposed to. We have checked the CCTV footage and found nothing incriminating. We will look into the matter. Someone seems to have misused the platform."
It should be mentioned in this context that the National Medical Commission (NMC), in the recent draft regulations has proposed a measure of allocating the First-year MBBS students in separate hostel blocks to prevent ragging instances in medical institutions across the country.
