BRD medical college 18 MBBS students accused of ragging, entering juniors' hostel, NMC seeks report on allegations

Gorakhpur: The administration of BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur has launched an investigation into alleged ragging involving 18 senior students.
These students have been accused of reportedly entering the hostel of first-year MBBS students with their faces covered on two occasions in October.
The students under investigation include 16 MBBS students from the 2025 batch and two interns. The college's anti-ragging squad is examining CCTV footage to identify those involved. While most of the students have reportedly been identified, the identities of two are yet to be established.
The investigation began after an unidentified person lodged a complaint with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Following the complaint, the commission directed the college administration to investigate the matter and submit a report.
The alleged incidents took place at a Hostel, where first-year MBBS students from the 2026 batch are staying. The students had joined the college around 25 days earlier. As per the hostel rules, senior students are not allowed to enter the hostel.
It has been alleged that the senior students reportedly entered the hostel late at night twice in October. They reportedly used the hostel rooftop and the emergency exit near the rear mess to gain entry. CCTV cameras installed on the premises captured some students entering with their faces covered.
On this basis, the anti-ragging squad is trying to identify them. However, the detailed information about the incidents related to ragging in this case will be clear only after investigation.
A meeting of the college's Anti-Ragging Cell was held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Principal Dr. Dharmendra Kumar. The meeting decided to inform the NMC about the matter and notify the families of the senior students under investigation.
The college is preparing to issue notices to the families and call them to the institution. According to the administration, another Anti-Ragging Cell meeting may be held in about a week to review the investigation and decide on further action.
Commenting on this, Dr. Dharmendra Kumar, Principal of BRD Medical College, told Jagran, "An investigation was conducted after receiving a complaint from the NMC. The Anti-Ragging Squad's action identified some senior students. Their families are being informed of the matter. After informing their families, strict action will be taken against the students involved in accordance with NMC regulations."
