DCI recommends 50 percent reduction of BDS seats in Kolkata Dental College
Kolkata: Taking note of the fact that R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital (RADCH), Kolkata does not have adequate infrastructure, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has recommended for a 50% reduction in the BDS seats in the college.
DCI took such a decision after it noted that the college lacked adequate equipment, staff and infrastructure for running 100 BDS Seats.
Apart from the BDS seats, the Apex dental commission has also recommended for a reduction in the PG dental seats as well. The Council has recommended the Union Health Ministry for reducing the PG dental seats in seven disciplines by one seat each.
Southeast Asia's one of the oldest dental college RADCH is a Government dental college based in Sealdah, Kolkata and it is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS).
Apart from the BDS course, the college also offers MDS course in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Orofacial Orthopaedics, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Paedodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthesis, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology.

The number of BDS seats for the dental college was increased from 50 to 100 seats back in 2007. Apart from 100 regular seats, there are 25 more seats for students belonging to EWS category. Currently, it offers MDS course in 33 seats.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, recently a joint verification team had visited the college back on December 26 and 27. During the inspection the DCI team found that the college did not have adequate staff, equipment and required infrastructure.
Therefore, the Dental Council has recommended for reducing 50% BDS seats at the college. Apart from the regular seats, the Council has also recommended slashing the EWS category seats by 50%.
Further, the one PG dental seat in each of the seven disciplines may also get reduced since the Council will recommend for the same to the Union Health Ministry.
