Faculty Shortage at Gujarat GMCs: 42% posts empty at six institutes
Ahmedabad: With fresh MBBS and PG admissions crowding the medical colleges, Gujarat is facing an acute shortage of staff at Government medical colleges and the medical institutes run by GMERS group.
In fact, in the six medical colleges of the State, approximately 42% i.e. a total number of 1,454 Class I to III posts are lying vacant among the total sanctioned strength of 3, 408.
Further, among the 2, 352 filled posts, contractual employees fill in 271 posts, while 180 posts are filled by fixed-pay employees.
The confirmation regarding this came from the Government, while it was responding to queries related to vacant posts at government medical colleges. An MLA from Bapunagar, associated with Congress party inquired about the vacant posts at BJ medical college.
Responding to this, the Government informed that in the Class I category, 342 posts had been sanctioned. However, a total number of 63 posts are lying vacant and 33 posts had to be filled with contractual employees.
It was informed by the Government that suitable candidates could not be found and as a result these posts are lying vacant.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the maximum number of vacancies are in Bhavnagar, where around 48% posts are yet to be filled in Class I to Class III category posts. While Bhavnagar Medical college has 589 sanctioned posts in these categories, 283 posts are lying vacant.
Jamnagar comes at the second place as around 45% of sanctioned posts i.e. 246 posts are lying vacant among the total strength of 544 posts in the three categories.
Apart from the GMCs, the Gujarat Medical Education & Research Society (GMERS) colleges are also facing a shortage of medical teachers. These institutes are located in Sola, Gotri, Valsad, Himmatnagar, Gandhinagar, Patan, Junagadh, and Vadnagar.
