Noida: With an aim of providing Post-graduate medical education in MD/MS (Doctor of Medicine/ Master of Surgery) specialties from the coming academic year, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Gautam Budh Nagar's Kasna is ready to apply before the National Medical Commission (NMC) for its approval.

The medical facility, with a bed capacity of 470, is planning to apply for MD/MS seats in all the streams including medicine, surgery, orthopedics, gynecology. and anesthesia before NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body.

"According to our infrastructure and bench strength, we are expected to get at least 100 MD/MS seats," GIMS Director Dr. Rakesh Gupta has recently informed Hindustan Times.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that just after securing permission from the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) to start the MBBS program with 100 seats back in 2019, the institute had applied for around 20 to 25 seats in five different streams including pediatrics, gynecology, medicine, surgery, and anesthesia, and an NBE inspection was held for the same.

Satisfied with the infrastructure, last year the NBE had allocated 20 DNB seats in five streams to GIMS. The DNB courses offered by the institute belonged to disciplines.

As per the latest media report by the Hindustan Times, now the institute plans to offer PG medical education in MD/MS specialties from 2022-2023 academic year and plans to apply to NMC for the recognition of the same.

After NMC approves of the PG courses, GIMS Noida will be one of the very few medical colleges in the country getting a permission to run MD/MS courses even before the completion of mandatory five years, officials have told HT.

While commenting on this issue, GIMS director Dr Rakesh Gupta informed the daily that after initiating the MBBS courses back in 2019 with NMC approval, the institute has initiated the process to get recognition to run the MD/MS courses as well in order to improve patient care.

"After increasing the bed capacity to 470, which is mandatory to get the permission to start postgraduate courses, GIMS has no hurdle in applying for MD and MS seats. Our infrastructure, patient load, number of faculties and laboratories also fulfil criteria which are needed by the NMC to grant the seats," he told HT.

Mentioning that GIMS would apply for MD/MS seats in all the streams, he further added, "According to our infrastructure and bench strength, we are expected to get at least 100 MD/MS seats. The NMC will invite applications from medical colleges by the end of August this year. They are supposed to sanction the MD/MS seats by the end of December this year. After getting the NMC permission, the Uttar Pradesh government will issue a sanction letter to us and then we will be able to take admission for these postgraduate courses through the National Eligibility Entrance Test (Postgraduate) or NEET (PG) for the academic session 2022-23."

GIMS Greater Noida, Gautam Buddha Nagar (UP) is a self-running medical teaching institute established by the State Government of Uttar Pradesh, established since the 15th of February 2016. GIMS is located in Greater Noida, near Kasna in Gautam Buddha Nagar, and caters to the districts of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Hapur, Bulandshahar, Khurja, Jewar, Mathura and neighboring areas.

Meanwhile, while speaking to the daily, NMC sources have also confirmed that the invitation process has been delayed this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

"We will soon release a notification in this regard and the final approval of PG seats will be done by December 2021. Once a medical college gets nod to start MD/MS courses, its DNB seats are deemed null and void after the beginning of MD/MS courses," an NMC board director told HT, requesting anonymity.

In order to get admitted to the course, a candidate must have an MBBS or equivalent degree with a 50% or above percentage and also have to clear the NEET-PG examination. "The course is covered in six semesters, comprising rotational training. Any medical college in Uttar Pradesh pays each of these students. The pay scale for a junior resident doctor (fixed by the state government) is ₹78,500 per month," the NMC official further said.
