Karnataka's Ramanagara, Kanakapura medical colleges unlikely to start this year, NMC approval awaited

Bengaluru: Karnataka's plans to establish new medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura are unlikely to materialise this academic year, with both institutions still awaiting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
While officials remain optimistic about Ramanagara securing the regulator's nod, uncertainty continues over Kanakapura due to infrastructure and staffing deficiencies.
According to a Deccan Chronicle report, NMC experts recently inspected the proposed medical colleges. However, no communication has been received from the Commission following the inspection. Sources at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) said they are hopeful about Ramanagara's prospects but remain doubtful about Kanakapura.

“There is no communication from the NMC subsequent to the inspection. We are confident of getting a nod for Ramanagara and doubtful about Kanakapura,” said a source.
Along with this, Dr B C Bhagwan, Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS, stated: “We have made the proposal to the NMC this year also. This is a constituent college of the university, and hence it is necessary to have our own hospital”.
The VC further stated that permission has been sought from the Finance Department to recruit faculty for Ramnagar Medical College.
However, this is not the first time the state government has applied to the NMC to open medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura; in fact, this is the third consecutive year. The proposal was rejected in the previous two years due to a lack of necessary infrastructure.
RGUHS has decided to construct a 900-bed high-tech hospital and a college at its new campus coming up in Ramanagara. A proposal regarding this has been submitted to the government.
Earlier this year, Medical Dialogues had reported that the Karnataka government decided to submit a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking approval to establish two new government medical colleges in Ramanagara and Bagalkot during the current year. However, the proposal for a medical college in Kanakapura had been deferred
