Hyderabad: 64 MBBS interns who protested against the non-payment of government-mandated stipends, have been suspended by the Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences (CAIMS), a private medical college based in Telangana's Karimnagar district.

The suspension order was issued on July 3, 2025, and in the order, the college authorities listed down the names of 64 MBBS interns who have now been suspended for a week.

"As per Disciplinary Action Committee report, the following internees of our institute are suspended from their duties for a period of one week with immediate effect from 04.07.2025 to 10.07.2025," read the suspension notice.

"They have to report for duties on 11.07.2025," it further read.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the action against these interns come after the interns at this college agitated for more than two months, alleging that despite a 2023 Government Order (G.O.) mandating a stipend of Rs 25,906 per month for the MBBS interns across both private and government medical colleges in Telangana, CAIMS has been paying its house surgeons only Rs 2,000 per month.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that recently, the Telangana Government announced a 15 per cent stipend hike for MBBS interns and doctors pursuing post-graduate and super-speciality courses in medicine and dentistry in government institutes across Telangana.

Due to the new Government Order issued on June 28, 2025, the monthly stipend for the house surgeons (medical and dental) was increased from Rs 25,906 to Rs 29,792.

However, the students at CAIMS have alleged that the new stipend amount is also not being honoured by the management. Meanwhile, on National Doctors Day i.e. on July 1, 2025, a group of MBBS interns staged a peaceful protest on the campus.

Reportedly, the college management called in the police and this led to a scuffle. Commenting on this, one of the suspended interns told The Hindu, "We have videos that clearly show the police being rude and aggressive with students who were protesting peacefully."

"Anyone who tries to raise their voice individually is threatened with academic retaliation which would make us ineligible for NEET-PG. So most of us remain silent. The suspension is a way to crush our collective protest," another intern said.

T-JUDA Condemns Police Misconduct and Institutional Harassment of Medicos:

Extending support to the protesting interns, the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) has condemned both the acts of misconduct by police and the institutional harassment against the doctors in Karimnagar on Doctor's Day.

"The Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) is deeply upset and strongly condemns the shocking incident that took place on Doctors’ Day (July 1st, 2025) at Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences (CAIMS), Karimnagar. A group of young doctors, engaged in a peaceful protest to raise legitimate demands for basic rights and minimum stipends, were reportedly subjected to verbal abuse, manhandling, intimidation, and threats by a police officer on campus," the association mentioned in the Press Note issued on July 4, 2025.

"Shockingly, the abuse did not stop there. Following this, college management summoned students and further harassed them with abusive and degrading language, issued threats, and took disciplinary actions including suspensions—causing deep emotional distress among the students," it further mentioned.

T-JUDA further mentioned how adding to the severity of the situation, the college management reportedly threatened students by saying that they would block their future careers, claiming that they had "high contacts in society" and that "no one can do anything to them."

"These are not only intimidating and unacceptable statements, but they also reflect a dangerous abuse of power and a clear attempt to silence and oppress students who are merely fighting for their rights," T-JUDA mentioned.

"The language and behavior of the management are reprehensible and unfit for an educational institution, especially one entrusted with training the next generation of healthcare professionals. That such disgraceful actions occurred on Doctors’ Day, a day meant to honor and recognize doctors, makes this incident even more disturbing and unacceptable," it further added.

Calling it a "gross violation of basic human dignity and rights, and a direct attack on the morale, security, and respect of the medical fraternity", the association added that the behaviour of both the police and the institutional authorities was "inexcusable" and it demanded immediate intervention.

Accordingly, the association urged the Chief Minister and Health Minister of Telangana to take swift and decisive action noting that "it is essential that the voices of young doctors be heard, respected, and protected."

The association has demanded an immediate revocation of all student suspensions issued by the CAIMS management, a formal public apology from the police officer(s) involved in the incident, and immediate disciplinary action against both the police personnel and college authorities responsible for the misconduct and harassment."
