Medical colleges in Mangaluru resume accepting cadavers
Mangaluru: Some medical colleges in Dakshina Kannada district are now accepting cadavers donation as first-year MBBS or Dental students need to know the real human anatomy, physiology, and surgery.
Earlier, it was seen that during COVID-19, some of the medical colleges stopped accepting donations of cadavers as they feared that the donated cadaver might be infected with COVID-19.
Since the spreading of covid has decreased, those medical colleges are now accepting cadavers for medical purposes.
Vice-Chancellor of Yenopoya (Deemed to be University), dean of the AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, and dean of Father Muller Medical College stated that their colleges stopped accepting cadavers donation but will soon resume accepting again.

According to these medical colleges, they said that there was no shortage of cadavers, despite no new donations.
Dr. M Vijaykumar, vice-chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) told "We had stopped accepting cadaver donations for the last one year and it resumed a few weeks ago. The reason for not taking cadavers was that there was fear of the body being infected with Covid-19."
Dr. Ashok Hegde, dean of the AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, told "the college has been not accepting cadavers since the onset of the pandemic. We will resume soon. The college has no dearth of cadavers."
Dr. Antony Sylvan D'Souza, the dean of Father Muller Medical College, told "the college had not received any cadaver donation in all three Covid waves. We are expecting that body donation may start soon as the situation has improved in the region."

However, some colleges' cadavers are still accepted, like Kasturba Medical College in Mangaluru, which still accepts cadavers after thorough scrutiny.
The dean of the college, Dr. Unnikrishnan told TOI "The college has received cadavers regularly. We have never stopped accepting cadavers in our college despite Covid-19. However, certain procedures have changed after Covid-19 while accepting the cadavers."
The head of the medical college also stated that the general public is becoming more aware of cadaver donation. Also, all the donated cadavers are unclaimed bodies that the medical college receives from District Wenlock Hospital in addition to normal donations.
