Dehradun: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has flagged deficiencies in the proposal submitted by Doon Medical College for expansion of PG seats and introduction of new courses.

According to a Live Hindustan report, the Apex Medical Commission has asked for a response along with evidence from the medical college within seven days.

For the academic year 2026-2027, the Doon Medical College has submitted a proposal for an increase of altogether 32 PG medical seats in seven departments.

The college sought an increase of seven seats in the Community Medicine department, three seats in the Biochemistry department, three seats in the ENT department, four seats in the Orthopaedics department, three in TB & Chest, nine seats in the Medicine department, and three seats in the Microbiology department.

Additionally, the college has also proposed to increase two seats each in Dermatology and Radiology, and two new seats each in DM Cardiology and MCh Plastic Surgery.

Incomplete Data Flagged by NMC:

Live Hindustan has reported that while reviewing the application, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC found that the data for several departments was below standard. The average bed occupancy in ENT was 57 percent, and it was 27 percent in the dermatology department. According to the NMC, this is inadequate. Further, three units were shown to have 150 beds, whereas the maximum bed capacity per unit is 40. The workload of minor surgeries was also found to be low. Meanwhile, the TB and Chest department recorded an 80% average daily OPD and a bed occupancy of 77 percent.

In the case of the Ortho and Plastic Surgery department, the details of last year's operative workload were missing. Information regarding the histopathology workload of the Ortho department was absent, and the radiology department submitted vague documents.

Apart from seeking clarity on the incomplete documents and data provided, NMC has also sought a course-wise breakdown of vacant postgraduate medical seats.

College issues Directions to rectify Deficiencies:

In response to the notice issued by the Apex Medical Commission, the Principal of the medical college, Dr. Geeta Jain, has directed the Heads of the Departments to rectify the deficiencies. She further said that a point-by-point report has been prepared and has been sent to the NMC. Within 15 days, an inspection is likely to happen.

Reportedly, the medical college will also be required to submit geo-tagged colour photographs of Doon Hospital and its departments, and such photographs must include the name, latitude, longitude, and date.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that earlier this year, the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted conditional renewal to Doon Medical College for its 150 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, allowing the institution to continue admissions this year.

However, along with this relief, the NMC had issued a strict ultimatum to the college administration to rectify several deficiencies, including a significant faculty shortage, within 45 days.

According to the NMC, the college was facing nearly a 40% shortage of faculty members, including teaching staff and doctors, which falls short of the commission's prescribed norms. In addition to the faculty shortage, the commission had also asked the college to address deficiencies related to infrastructure, available resources, and clinical material within the specified time period. After the deadline, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) decided to conduct another strict and surprise inspection of the college. The NMC has warned that if the deficiencies are not rectified during the follow-up inspection, the college's recognition could be at risk.
