NRI Medical College Vishakhapatnam MBBS student commits suicide

Visakhapatnam: In an unfortunate incident, a 21-year-old second-year MBBS student at NRI Institute of Medical Sciences (NRIIMS), Tagarapuvalasa, allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the fifth floor in Visakhapatnam.

While the exact reason behind her death is yet to be ascertained, the police’s preliminary investigation revealed that she was struggling with her studies and was under academic stress, which may have driven her to take the extreme step.

According to police findings, the student, a native of Makavarapaleni in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalle district, had come to her uncle's home in Visakhapatnam to prepare for her supplementary exams after reportedly failing several subjects in her first year.

On Monday, she and her mother visited her uncle's residence and stayed there for her exam preparation. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, around 7 pm, when she went upstairs for a walk and subsequently jumped from the fifth floor, as per ETV Bharat media report.

"She was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead," said Pendurthi police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Bhaskara Rao.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

Medical Dialogues earlier reported that a 20-year-old first-year MBBS student at Gitam Medical College allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the medical college.

To prevent suicide and promote mental well‑being among medical professionals, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) launched a dedicated 365-day Mental Health Redressal Helpline (MHRH) in August this year. This helpline aims to support doctors, medical students, and healthcare workers facing stress and mental health challenges.

The helpline is available 20 hours daily, seven days a week, and is managed by a dedicated team of psychiatrists who cater to the mental health needs of medical professionals to ensure that residents receive timely, professional, and confidential support. It is available for a whole year from Monday to Sunday in different time slots.
