Ragging Horror at RG Kar Medical College Kolkata: Seniors allegedly Threaten Junior Medicos with Wooden Clubs, hacksaws, Case Filed
Kolkata: Medical students residing at the R G Kar Medical College Hostel on Wednesday filed a complaint of "ragging", "mental torture", "harassment" and "intimidation" against 13 senior students of the institute.
The complaint was filed after some of the senior students along with a few former students of the medical college allegedly barged into a hostel of their juniors with wooden clubs and hacksaws in the dead of the night and threatened them for attending a function, police informed PTI on Thursday.
Around 9-10 senior and former students broke into the boys’ hostel in Maniktala around 3 am on Wednesday, demanding explanations from the juniors on why they attended the felicitation of the new principal on Tuesday.
The group left the hostel before dawn, a junior student said. Following this, a complaint was filed at the Amherst Street police station by the hostel boarders. Investigators visited the hostel, a police officer said, adding that no arrests have been made yet.

As per the latest media report by Telegraph India, according to the complaint, which was forwarded to the Amherst Street police station by the superintendent of the hostel, the accused students were medical interns, final-year students, former students, and house staff of the hospital.
Mentioning that the accused entered the hostel at around 3 am on Wednesday, the complaint further stated, “They started banging our doors and did not stop till we opened the door of our room”. They entered our room forcefully and started to subject us to intense mental torture and ragging.”
It further mentioned, "Two of our hostel mates were locked in a room from inside (room no xx) and continuously ragged them for around 2 and a half hours. We are being threatened for our career and life."
Hostel superintendent Swapan Mondal said, “I have been told that some people came to the hostel and shouted at the junior students. I will take steps as none can enter the hostel after 11 pm.”
Mentioning that he was alerted by security guards about 20 minutes after the senior students entered the hostel, the Hostel Superintendent further informed Telegraph India that usually the first and second-year students stay in the hostels situated outside the hospital premises, including the one in Maniktala. Senior students, on the other hand, are shifted to the hostel on the hospital campus.
“I went up and asked the outsiders to leave. Most of them are residents of the main hostel on the hospital campus. They were in the Maniktala hostel for around 30 minutes,” he added.
Commenting on the matter, the joint commissioner (crime) of the city police, Shankha Shubhra Chakrabarty told the Daily, "A case been recorded against the accused for wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and common intention and under sections of the West Bengal Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institution Act, 2000."
The Daily further adds that the sources in the hospital have linked the visit of the accused to the hostel over the transfer of the principal of the medical college. Mentioning that some of the students are opposed to the transfer, sources further informed that the visit of the accused to the hostel was to put pressure on the students to join the protests against the transfer.
A demonstration was held at the hospital after former principal doctor Sandip Ghosh was transferred. He was replaced by doctor Manas Bandyopadhyay, whose felicitation programme was held on Tuesday.
