Tamil Nadu: MBBS fee reduced at Govt Erode Medical College
Chennai: The students of Government Erode Medical College (formerly known as IRT- Perundurai Medical College and Hospital) can now rejoice in happiness as the Tamil Nadu Government has issued a Government Order (G.O.) to revise the fees of the medical college and bring it at par with other government medical colleges of the state.
As per the latest G.O., the fees for MBBS courses in the medical college would be Rs 13,610 for a year, making it equal to the fees structures of other Government medical colleges of the State. The G.O. has mentioned the revised fees for various diplomas in paramedical and certificate courses as well.
Earlier, orders were issued directing that the IRT - Perundurai Medical College and Hospital and School of Nursing run by the Institute of Road Transport be handed over to the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu from the academic year 2019-2020 subject to certain conditions. Then orders were issued to take over the movable and immovable properties attached to the medical college under the control of the Health and Family Welfare Department further renaming it as "Government Erode Medical College and Hospital" at Perundurai, Erode District.
Giving clarification about the reduction of fees at the Government Erode Medical College, the G.O. had further stated, "In continuation of the above orders, the Government hereby accord administrative sanction on the following:-a) The fees structure for the Medical and Nursing courses of the Government Medical College and Hospital at Perundurai, Erode and School of Nursing attached to Government Erode Medical College and Hospital at Perundurai, Erode are revised as detailed below."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that over 150 MBBS students of 'hybrid' Government Erode Medical College and Hospital protested against the high fee structure even after being taken over by the government for two years now. The medicos raised slogans and staged a demonstration in front of the institution demanding to reduce the fee and bring it at par with other government medical colleges.
Government Erode Medical College and Hospital formerly known as the Institute of Road and Transport (IRT) Perundurai Medical College was established in 1992. In 2018 when the government decided to take the college under its wing, it moved the college from the Transport Department to the Health and Family Welfare Department. In 2019, the Tamil Nadu Government took over the IRT Perundurai Medical College and renamed it as Government Erode Medical College, affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai.
Though the name and control over the institution changed, the fee structure of the institution did not change at all as the medical students had been paying Rs 3.85 lakh every year instead of Rs 13,160, the standard government medical college fee. Hence, revision in the fee structure had been a long-sought demand for the medicos of Erode GMCH.
Recently, Tamil Nadu Medical Student Association (TNMSA) had confirmed that the State government had decided to drag down the fee structure to bring it at par with other government medical colleges.
The Hindu adds, the latest G.O., that has reduced the fees for the medical college, would be effective from 20.02.2021. There would be no refund for the fees already paid or it wouldn't be adjusted for future payments. The benefit of the revised fee structure would be available and extended to the current and forthcoming students.
