Medical Education in Odisha: NMC gives final nod for 24 PG seats at PGIMER Capital Hospital
Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to the Postgraduate medical education in Odisha, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given the final nod for 24 Postgraduate medical seats in Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar.
These 24 PG medical (MD/MS) seats belong to six specialties including obstetrics and gynaecology, medicine, surgery, paediatrics, respiratory medicine, and orthopaedics department. For the first three departments, NMC has given its nod for five seats each, while for paediatrics, respiratory medicine and orthopaedics, four, three and two seats have been approved respectively.
Admission in these new MD/MS seats shall commence from the current academic session i.e. 2022-2023 academic year, adds TOI.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's Twitter handle confirmed this development and mentioned in a Tweet, "In a major boost to health sector in #Odisha, @NMC_IND has given final permission to start post-graduate courses in PGIMER and Capital Hospital."
Apart from the PG medical course, the tweet by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) further confirmed that NMC has given its permission for GMC Sundargarh and Keonjhar with 100 MBBS seats each.

The nod from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC for the PG medical seats came after the Commission reviewed the assessor's report that addressed several aspects of the institute including its faculty and their experience, publication, other teaching facilities, infrastructure etc.
While commenting on the matter, the Director of the Institute, Nibedita Pani confirmed to the Times of India regarding the total number of PG medical seats approved in the six specialties and also added that 50% of these seats would be filled via All India Quota counselling.
She told the daily, "Counselling for these seats will start from September 15. After admission for the all India quota is over, we will conduct an admission process for the remaining seats that come under the state quota."
Mentioning that the classes may start from October 15, she further added, "We are making the hostel ready for those who will take admission here. We have a very good team to run the institute and the courses."
"The state government will provide all infrastructural facilities such as teaching and non-teaching staff, buildings, equipment, hospital facilities as per the NMC norms," confirmed the Office of the Chief Minister.
