Allahabad HC Issues Notice to KGMU over no elections for University Court, Executive Committee
Lucknow: Acting on a contempt application, the Allahabad High Court has recently served notice to the Vice Chancellor of King George's Medical University seeking to know the reason for not holding the polls to elect the members of the University Court (UC) and Executive Council (EC).
This comes after one of the former KGMU executive member filed a contempt case against the University as the Institute failed to comply with an earlier order of the HC for holding the pending elections for 3 years.
University Court consists of 50 members, of whom 15 gets selected via an election process. Among these 15 members, four gets elected to the EC. The importance of these two governing bodies lies in the fact that they are actively involved in the decision-making process of the KGMU- starting from patient care to faculty issues.
It was around six years ago when the polls for electing members of UC and EC of KGMU was hold after the High Court had passed a direction regarding this.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, for the last three years, the polls for electing the 15 UC and EC members have not been held. In fact, KGMU Teachers' Association had also pointed out this issue in its complaint to the Governor in June 2021.
Earlier, the petitioner, who was a former executive member and had served as the chief medical superintendent of KGMU had filed a case in this regard. He had sought a direction upon the concerned authorities for holding the pending polls for deciding the bodies of the medical university.
TOI adds that in an earlier court order, the medical university was directed to conduct the pending polls for electing the members of the UC and EC. As the court order was not complied with, the petitioner has recently filed a contempt case against the authorities.
Acting on the complaint, the Allahabad HC bench comprising of Justice Attau Rahman Masoodi has issued notice to the VC of the University and has sought a reply explaining the reasons for not carrying out the election process.
