Postpone 2nd year MBBS exams: Doctors' body urges BUHS, cites violation of NMC norm

New Delhi: Raising the concerns of the MBBS students of the 2024 batch of Bihar, a doctors' body has urged the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) to postpone the 2nd Professional MBBS Examination, 2026, scheduled from 15 September to 28 September 2026.
Writing to the Vice Chancellor of BUHS, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) pointed out that, as per the NMC CBME curriculum, the Second Professional/Phase II of MBBS is prescribed as a 12-month academic phase, including the University Examination. However, the schedule by BUHS requires the 2024 batch to appear for the examination after only around 6-7 months of academic teaching, substantially short of the prescribed duration, FAIMA pointed out.
"The concern is particularly serious for supplementary/repeater students, who would get only around three months to prepare the entire extensive Second Professional syllabus. This issue has also been highlighted in national medical media, reflecting the widespread concern among MBBS students across Bihar," the letter by FAIMA added.
The association has requested BUHS to postpone the examination for at least one month, starting theory exams from 15 October 2026, and to ensure adequate teaching, clinical exposure and preparation time for all students. They have also requested the authorities to provide supplementary candidates with reasonable time to prepare for the examination.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that 2nd-year MBBS students from several medical colleges across Bihar submitted their representations to various Government authorities, including the Vice Chancellor of BUHS, the Chief Secretary of the Bihar Government, and the Bihar Health Minister, and requested the postponement of the 2nd Professional MBBS Examination in September 2026, set to be held between 15.09.2026 and 28.09.2026.
The students stated that they have received only around six months of academic teaching, as the results for the MBBS 1st Professional examination were declared in February 2026. The academic period for the supplementary batch is even shorter, as the supplementary results were declared on June 8, 2026
According to the students, due to a short gap between the two examinations, they now have very limited time to complete the syllabus and prepare properly, and this is putting immense pressure on them.
In this situation, the students urged the State Government authorities, including the Vice Chancellor of BUHS and the State Health Minister, to intervene and ensure a fair examination schedule. In their representation, the students referred to NMC's Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum, which prescribes a 12-month duration for the Second Professional MBBS course. This requirement was further clarified by NMC on June 12, 2023, when the Commission reiterated that the duration for the Second Professional MBBS course shall be 12 months.
