NMC to introduce medical education reforms for greater focus on andrology

National Medical Commission (NMC)
Bhubaneswar: The National Medical Commission (NMC) is planning reforms in medical education aimed at giving andrology greater prominence through specialised qualifications and training for healthcare professionals.
Speaking in this regard, Dr Vijay Oza, President of NMC's PG medical education board said, “We are introducing several reforms in medical education to ensure andrology receives greater emphasis, including an enhanced scope, specialized qualifications, and focused training."
"Andrology is an important component of the healthcare system, yet it continues to have a limited presence in India’s health education framework," Dr. Oza said while addressing the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme AndroXcell 2025, reports UNI
The one-day workshop aimed to present the latest advancements, clinical insights, and best practices in andrology to healthcare professionals, with a focus on male sexual dysfunction and male infertility.
The CME featured eminent faculty members from across the country, engaging delegates in interactive educational sessions.
Dr. Oza said the initiative marked a step toward transforming the healthcare education system, bringing andrology to the forefront, and addressing often-unspoken issues affecting society, adds UNI
Prof. (Dr.) Datteswar Hota, Senior Urologist, Andrologist, and Transplant Surgeon, said the objective of the event was to raise awareness about male sexual health, a subject that still receives very little attention in the health education system.
“Unfortunately, it has remained a taboo topic for many, leading countless individuals to suffer in silence throughout their lives,he said.
Through this programme, we aim to equip doctors with deeper knowledge of andrology and effective ways to identify, address, and treat related concerns. This is the first step toward significant change in the field of andrology,” Dr.Hota said.
Brig (Dr.) Biraj Mohan Mishra, Chief of Medical Services at SUMUM, said the event was a step toward changing societal attitudes in an area where male sexual health had long been overlooked.
“For the first time in Eastern India, SUMUM has hosted an event dedicated to this important subject. We are privileged to have leading experts in andrology from across the country, as well as government representatives, joining us to share their knowledge. This reinforces our commitment to bringing andrology into mainstream healthcare and strengthening its scope at SUMUM,” Brig Mishra said.
Dr. Swetapadma Dash, CEO of SUMUM and Patron of AndroXcell 2025, said male sexual health has long been neglected in mainstream discussions, despite its profound impact on quality of life.
“By hosting this CME, we are taking a decisive step toward breaking the silence, spreading awareness, and equipping our medical fraternity with the knowledge and skills to address these issues with sensitivity and expertise.
This is not just an event; it is the beginning of a much-needed conversation in our state,” she said.
