Hyderabad: The medical students in Telangana, whose admissions were cancelled by the National Medical Commission (NMC) are still waiting to get reallocated to other colleges since NMC is yet to approve the plans for reallocation of two colleges.

While it has been around three months after the Apex medical body had cancelled the recognition of three private medical colleges, recently NMC has given its nod for the reallocation plans for around 150 students belonging to TRR Medical College.

However, regarding the students of MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, and Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad, the State Government has to submit proposals in compliance with the guidelines. Only after this NMC will approve the plans for reallocation and the long wait of the Telangana medicos will come to an end.

Meanwhile, a group of students had recently approached the NMC seeking its intervention on the matter.

The crisis regarding the medical seats began after the National Medical Commission (NMC) cancelled MBBS and PG medical admission in three private medical colleges in Telangana following a surprise inspection. It resulted in a huge decrease in the total number of seats. In case of MNR Medical College and Hospital, both MBBS and PG admissions had been cancelled. NMC further cancelled PG medical seats in Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences. Apart from this, TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru lost its letter of permission for the first renewal and second batch of admission.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that unsure about their future, recently around 48 such affected PG medical students belonging to MNR Medical College had approached a Division bench of Telangana High Court and sought a direction on the NMC for issuing guidelines to the State for reallocating the students to existing Government and Private Medical Colleges in the State within a specific and short time frame without affecting the Academic year of the Petitioners.

The students also questioned the delay on the part of the Telangana State and KNRUHS for reallocating the students. They claimed that the authorities were not taking the necessary steps to solve this issue even after 20 days have passed since the date of cancellation of the PG admissions in MNR College.

During the hearing of the case last month, the High Court bench had directed NMC to relocate those medicos to other medical colleges in Telangana within four weeks with the help of the State Government and the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS). In fact, the Apex medical body had also sought an action taken report from the State.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, in this regard, the State had sent the proposal for transferring 150 students of TRR Medical College to the Central Government and consequently the proposal was sent to the NMC for consideration. Recently the Commission gave its nod for the proposal.

However, the proposal for the other two colleges is yet to be sent by the colleges. Confirming the same, an NMC member told TOI, "We had previously written to the the state government reallocating students of the three colleges to the Government of Telangana and gave them the guidelines. They have followed the guidelines and submitted a proposal for reallocation of 150 seats of TRR Medical College creating supernumerary seats in other existing colleges in the state- which we have approved. The state government is supposed to follow the guidelines for the other two colleges too."

While commenting on the matter, a senior official of the State Health Department told the daily, "The plan for reallocation of students of TRR by increasing supernumerary seats in 14 colleges was sent to the NMC for approval as a one time measure. We have asked the Centre to intervene and expedite the process."

Meanwhile, after cancellation of their admission, the Telangana medicos are yet to join their classes and speaking about the same, a PG student from MNR college said, "Our contemporaries have been attending classes for the last three months and they have even submitted their thesis topics. Whereas we have not even started our curriculum. As we are PG students, attending hospital duty is a crucial part of our curriculum. We cannot study at home. No one in the government or Kalolji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) or NMC has bothered to resolve the issue quickly. We are sitting idle and loosing time."
