Private Medical Colleges not providing adequate training, West Bengal govt to introduce special programme for doctors
Kolkata: The West Bengal Government is contemplating to introduce a training programme for medical graduates from a section of private medical colleges in the State.
Announcement in this regard was made by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday while she referred to the fact that several private medical colleges so not provide adequate training to their students despite taking a huge amount of money.
The Chief Minister made this announcement while addressing a gathering at the SSKM Hospital auditorium, where she inaugurated several health-related projects. Foundation of a series of new projects was also laid at the event.
West Bengal has a total number of 27 medical colleges with an intake capacity of 4150 MBBS seats. Among these 3150 MBBS seats are in 20 Government medical colleges and 1000 MBBS seats are in 7 private medical colleges.

As per the latest media report by Millennium Post, the Chief Minister pointed out that inadequate training for the doctors may result in harming the society. Even after getting the degrees from the private medical colleges, these doctors are not properly trained, opined the Chief Minister.
In this regard, CM Banerjee said, "Some private medical colleges do not offer proper theoretical classes and practical classes too. If the students do not get practical classes they will not be properly trained. They admit students for a hefty amount. It, however, contributes to the existing number of doctors. Patients may die if these doctors fail to provide proper treatment. Patients sometimes die due to wrong treatment."
"We have to think if a training programme can be introduced for these doctors. We have to think about the next generation of doctors. We will contemplate if some experts can be engaged to train these doctors," she further added.
"Students get more opportunity to learn something new from the practical classes. The government medical colleges in the city like SSKM, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and RG Kar are different. Only bright students get a chance to get into these colleges where they get ample opportunities to learn from practical classes," mentioned the Bengal CM.
During the SSKM Hospital auditorium gathering, Banerjee inaugurated a renovated 100-bedded pediatric medicine ward and also a four-storeyed state-of-the-art sports medicine unit. Further, the Chief Minister inaugurated a 33/6 KV substation and a 128-slice CT scan machine at Bangur Institute of Neuroscience.
The foundation of several new projects including a 10-storeyed 124-bedded private cabin building was also laid by the Chief Minister. This building will include an outdoor, laboratory, radiological services and an operation theatre for patients, a 7-storeyed hostel building and a 10-storeyed cancer hub with advanced cancer treatment facilities.
Apart from these, CM Banerjee also laid the foundation of a 50-bedded critical care block at Kolkata Police Hospital with an operation theatre, dialysis, emergency, and isolation ward services among others.
